Men's Soccer Nets Late Goal to Defeat Holy Cross

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- A late goal with just under two minutes to play by Matt Thorsheim lifted the Bucknell men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over Holy Cross on a humid afternoon at Emmitt Field.
The play started from the back when the ball found the feet of Patrick Mahoney just past midfield. Given time and space, Mahoney picked out a long diagonal pass towards the corner that found a streaking Alex Clarke on the right wing.
A Holy Cross defender initially got a touch on the ball while battling with Clarke, but Clarke managed to win the ball back on the end line before laying off a pass to a waiting Thorsheim about 10 yards out. Thorsheim struck a low shot across his body that found the lower right corner to deliver the Bison's fifth victory of the season in its seventh overtime fixture so far.
The Bison improve to 5-3-3 on the season and 3-0-1 in Patriot League play. The last time the Bison started a Patriot League campaign unbeaten through four games was the 2003 season.
Bucknell controlled much of the possession throughout the first half, with Thorsheim dragging a low shot wide in the 19th minute.
The Crusaders had their best chance of the half after an in-behind Simon Becher tiptoed down the right end line past an outstretched Ryan Ott before Tyler Peterson sprinted back and blocked the attempt from Becher right on the goal line.
The goal-line clearance was the second in as many games for Peterson.
The Bison came closest to taking the lead in the 43rd minute when a chip attempt outside the 18 from Stefan Gollisz nearly caught Holy Cross goal keeper Henry Stutz off his line, but the ball dropped just over the cross bar as the two teams entered halftime scoreless.
Thorsheim nearly got on the scoresheet just a minute into the second half, firing a low shot that forced Stutz into his first save of the match.
Holy Cross picked up the tempo to start the second half, as Max Krause had a good look at goal from about 12 yards out that went wide of the goal in the 48th minute before a threatening cross from the right side nearly found the head of Becher a few minutes later.
Krause forced Ott into his first save of the match in the 75th minute, but neither team could break the deadlock and the game went into overtime for the fifth time at Emmitt Field for the Bison.
Neither team managed a clear-cut opportunity in the first overtime period, with Nick King looking to beat Stutz from distance in the 91st and 93rd minute, but his shots were placed wide and high of the goal.
Bucknell pushed for all three points in the second overtime period, with an excellent pass from King picking out Cody Wax down the left wing. Wax tried to lift the ball over Stutz, but the Holy Cross goal keeper made an excellent one-on-one save. The deflection from Stutz then fell to the feet of Michael Pavick, but his shot went high of the goal.
After coming on in the 105th minute, Clarke made almost an instant impact as his cross to Thorsheim finally broke the deadlock and extended the Bison unbeaten streak to four games.
"It was a warm day and with three Patriot League games in the span of one week, we really needed to use our bench and go deeper today." Head Coach Brendan Nash said. "We improved as the game went along, and I think we wore them down a bit late in regulation and into overtime. The winning goal came on a hustle play by Alex Clarke, who was fresh after sitting for a bit. To win 1-0 games in the Patriot League sometimes you need a bit of luck, and we got the right bounce to get Alex in, and he made a great pass to set up the goal. Matt Thorsheim finished it well, and hopefully that will help pick up his confidence."
The Bison outshot Holy Cross 18-14, with a 4-2 advantage in shots on target. Ott made two saves in goal for Bucknell. The Bison also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bison will host Colgate at Emmitt Field in its next contest on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. before playing its final nonconference game of the season Oct. 16 at Binghamton.
