WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senior Madison Hurwitz collected a career-high nine points with five goals and four assists, leading the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to a 22-9 victory over Howard on Wednesday evening at Greene Field. Cori Thielemann added four more goals and Katelyn Miller had a huge game with three goals, three assists and eight draw controls in the Bison vs. Bison matchup.
Ryan Wenk tossed in three goals, Adrienne Wendling and Sophie Kleinert had two each, and Emily Kookogey, Sam Rickels and Caroline Collins one apiece as Bucknell posted a season high for goals in a game. Collins, a sophomore defender, scored the first goal of her career. Kookogey also had an assist for a multi-point night.
Howard scored first just 73 seconds into the game, but Bucknell scored the next six goals in a row to take command. Five different players scored during the run, with Hurwitz scoring twice.
Late in the half Howard used a 4-2 run to pull within 10-6, but Kleinert stopped the momentum with an unassisted tally with 1:32 left to make it 11-6 at the half.
Bucknell (2-10) then stormed out of the locker room with six goals in the first 8:11 of the second half. Miller's goal stretched the lead to 17-6. Howard scored three goals in a row, but then Bucknell scored the final five of the night, including a shorthanded tally from Hurwitz off a Kookogey assist.
Hurwitz came within one goal of her career best. She tallied six goals against Manhattan in 2011. Her previous best for points in a game was seven against Presbyterian last season. Hurwitz also led the Bison with four ground balls against Howard.
Thielemann's four goals marked a new career high, and she also led the team with three caused turnovers.
Jaymie Cox led Howard (1-11) with three goals and eight draw controls, while Courtney Lackey and Cynthia Smalls added two goals each. All nine of Howard's goals were unassisted, with three coming on free-position shots.
Bucknell outshot Howard 39-20 and led 18-7 in ground balls and 19-14 in draw controls. Howard goalie Candace Ross finished with 11 saves, while Caroline O'Neill had four for Bucknell.
