WASHINGTON, D.C. - Katelyn Miller scored three goals for Bucknell, but Emily Maher matched that total for American and the Eagles scored eight of the final nine goals of the game in an 11-6 Patriot League win over the Bison on Saturday at Jacobs Field.
Sam Rickels, Ryan Wenk and Sophie Kleinert also scored for Bucknell, which led 5-3 with 5:14 left in the first half before American made its run. The Eagles tied it with two goals in the final 4:33 of the half, and then scored the first six of the second half while shutting out the Bison until the final minute of the game.
Maher's unassisted tally with 22:11 remaining put American ahead to stay. Olivia Mangan and Maher paired goals 45 seconds apart midway through the second half to give the Eagles some breathing room.
Miller finished off her hat trick on an 8-meter attempt with 32 seconds left in the game, giving her 20 goals for the third season in a row.
Bucknell trailed 3-1 inside 14 minutes to play in a defensive-oriented first half. The Bison then exploded for four goals in a span of 8:01 to take the lead for the first time. Madison Hurwitz fed Wenk for the tying goal, and Kleinert's free-position tally gave Bucknell a 4-3 lead. Rickels added an unassisted score with 5:14 left in the half to make it 5-3.
Bucknell had the better of the stat sheet in several categories, including shots (21-18) and draw controls (12-7). The Bison committed only 12 fouls to 18 for American, and the Eagles did not have a free-position attempt in the contest.
Rickels and Adrienne Wendling finished with three draw controls each, while Miller had two.
Teal Harrison made 10 saves for American, including eight in the decisive second half. Caroline O'Neill finished with four saves for the Bison.
Bucknell will be back in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, taking on Howard at 6 p.m.
