LEWISBURG, Pa. - Haley Marafioti piled up 10 points with five goals and five assists to lead Duquesne to an 18-9 win over Bucknell in a non-league women's lacrosse game on Tuesday afternoon at Graham Field. Madison Hurwitz scored a season-high four goals for the Bison, who had a good stretch in the second half but could not overcome a 9-2 halftime deficit.
Katelyn Miller tallied two goals and an assist, Sam Rickels had a goal and an assist, and Sophie Kleinert and Ryan Wenk also scored for the Bison (1-9). Duquesne (5-4) also received four goals and two assists from Amanda Kidder, four goals from Meredith Dunn, three from Clare Hurley and two from Caitlin Prince.
The Bison scored first when Miller hit Hurwitz for a transition goal 2:51 into the contest. Bucknell kept the lead for more than four minutes before Hurley tied it up on a free-position shot. Just 32 seconds later Kidder scored off a Marafioti feed, and the Dukes had the lead for good.
Duquesne stretched it to 9-2 by halftime and then Hurley opened the second-half scoring just 20 seconds in to make it 10-2. Bucknell responded with a strong five-minute stretch in which it posted a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to five.
Rickels used a nice dodge to get free in front of the cage for her sixth goal of the season, and Wenk followed with an unassisted goal. After Marafioti scored for the Dukes, Miller and Kleinert both converted 8-meter attempts to make it an 11-6 game.
But Duquesne would answer with six straight goals to put the game away. Kidder scored three of those, and her tally with 9:19 to play made it a 17-6 game.
Duquesne outshot Bucknell 27-17 and edged the Bison 17-16 in ground balls and 16-13 in draw controls.
The Bison return to Patriot League play on Saturday at American at 2 p.m.
