DURHAM, N.C. - The Bison women's lacrosse team opened its 2012 campaign at fifth-ranked Duke on Saturday, and the Blue Devils, coming off a Final Four season, topped Bucknell 25-3 at Koskinen Stadium. A pair of first-year players turned in multi-point games for the Bison, as Arriana Sajjad (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) scored twice and Chloe Chou (Penn Valley, Pa./Agnes Irwin) assisted on all three goals.
Kerrin Maurer led Duke with eight points on three goals and five assists. Maddy Morrissey added three goals, and six other Blue Devils scored twice each. Duke tallied the first 10 goals of the game and led 17-1 at the half.
Sajjad scored her first collegiate goal at the 14:43 mark of the first half to get the Bison on the board. Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock), coming off a 29-goal sophomore season, scored early in the first half, and Sajjad scored again with 6:30 remaining in the game.
Duke finished with a 45-8 shot advantage and held the Bison to 4-for-15 on clears. Ground balls were much closer, with the Blue Devils holding a 14-10 edge. Bison sophomore Katelyn Miller (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh), the team's top returning point-producer, was kept off the scoresheet, although she did compile three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Freshman Caroline O'Neill (Bel Air, Md./Notre Dame Prep) earned the start in goal and finished with five saves. Sophomore Katherine Fraile (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) made her Bison debut in the second half and stopped a pair of shots.
In addition to O'Neill and Chou, freshmen Emily Kookogey (Lutherville, Md./Towson) and Alex Wallace (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) also earned opening-day starts.
The Bison have another tough test in their second game of the season, a home date with No. 17 Penn State on Feb. 15.
