LEWISBURG, Pa. - Playing a nationally ranked team for the second time in as many games to start the season, the Bucknell women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-3 decision to No. 17 Penn State on Wednesday at Graham Field. Freshman Arriana Sajjad(Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) recorded her second straight two-goal game for the Bison, who fell to 0-2 on the season.
Katie Guy and Kelly Lechner scored three goals each and Molly Fernandez and Mackenzie Cyr both added two goals and an assist for the Nittany Lions, who used a well-balanced attack to post a victory in their season opener. Eleven different players recorded a goal and six players had multi-goal games for Penn State, which held a 31-12 shot advantage.
Penn State scored the game's first four goals before the Bison got on the board at the 23:13 mark of the first half. Adrienne Wendling (Bethesda, Md./Bullis) set the goal in motion after corralling one of her six draw controls on the day. Wendling grabbed the loose ball heading toward the Penn State goal, and she made a great pass ahead to Madison Hurwitz(Holland, Pa./Council Rock) inside the 8-meter arc. Hurwitz slipped a shot past Dana Cahill for her second goal of the season.
The Nittany Lions would go on to take a 12-1 lead at the half, and they built their cushion up to 18-1 before Sajjad struck twice in a row in the final 10 minutes. Sajjad, who also scored two goals in the season-opener at No. 5 Duke, tallied her first of the day on a drive to the goal, and her second came just over two minutes later on a free-position shot.
A big positive for Bucknell came on draw controls. The Bison won all nine second-half draws and finished with a 14-9 advantage in that category. In addition to Wendling's career-high six draw controls, Sajjad and Sophie Kleinert(Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) logged three apiece.
Penn State finished with an 18-6 edge in ground balls and were successful on 18 of 19 clears, while the Bison were 6-for-13.
Bucknell split the goalie duties for the second straight game. Starter Caroline O'Neill (Bel Air, Md./Notre Dame Prep) tallied four saves, while Katherine Fraile(Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) came on in the second half and stopped three shots. Cahill had four saves for Penn State, and Ayla Halus had one in relief.
Next up for the Bison is a trip to Duquesne at 3 p.m. this Saturday.
