STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team could not carry the momentum it gained from defeating Davidson on a buzzer-beating goal on Sunday into Wednesday's outing at Wagner. The Bison, looking to improve to 2-1 on the young season, lost to the Seahawks 12-11 Wednesday evening despite scoring two goals in the first 130 seconds of play.
Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) and Michelle Milot (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) each netted three goals for Bucknell (1-2), but Wagner (1-0) outscored the Bison 6-2 during a 17-minute stretch in the middle of the first half, building a three-goal cushion.
Bucknell scored four straight goals spanning the final four minutes of the first half and the first three minutes of the second half to take a 9-8 lead. The Bison again led at 10-9, but the Seahawks netted three consecutive goals, with Terri Noll converting a free position shot with 4:57 on the clock with what proved to be the winning score. Braun tacked on an unassisted goal in the final minute to make the final margin just one goal.
Milot was hot early for Bucknell, scoring the team's first three goals. Two of Braun's three scores came in the second half. Braun now has a team-high six goals this year, while Milot has converted five to go along with one assist. Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), who found the back of the net twice, gave the Bison three players with multiple goals as she scored twice in the second half.
Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East), who entered the game averaging 12 saves per game, stopped just five shots. Her counterpart, Alex Johnston, recorded eight saves.
Krista Malayter and Noll each converted three goals for the Seahawks, while Melanie Garces added a pair.
Despite coming up short in the scoring column, Bucknell outshot Wagner 25-22 and won 16 of the 25 draw controls. The Bison did fail to convert both of their free position shots, while the Seahawks were a perfect 2-for-2.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak in the series for Bucknell, which is now 6-3 all-time against Wagner. The Bison had won the last four in a row by a combined 66-35 margin, including 14-5 last year at Graham Field.
Bucknell will return to action this weekend when it travels to Robert Morris for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 28.
