LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) led another offensive onslaught with four goals and three assists, pacing the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to a 21-11 rout of Lafayette on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon at Graham Field. Bucknell, now 7-8 on the season, scored 16 goals in the first half and hit the 20-goal mark for the second time in four days.
In addition to Buechel's seven-goal performance, freshman Chelsea Peters backed up her six-goal outing in Wednesday's 23-5 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) with six more points on four goals and two assists. Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) had a season-high five points on three goals and two assists, while freshmen Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), Alison Heffernan (Malvern, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) and Paige Kasschau (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) each scored two goals.
Prior to the game, seniors Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville), Erin Weinstein (Stanfordville, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) and Shauna Weinstein (Stanfordville, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) were recognized as part of Senior Day festivities, and all three contributed to the victory. Kremer had a goal and two caused turnovers, Erin Weinstein picked up an assist and two takeaways, and Shauna Weinstein put the clamps on Lafayette star Maddy Booth. The junior middie came in with 66 points in 15 games, but was held scoreless with a couple of turnovers in this one.
Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) and Catherine Barry (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) also turned in stellar defensive performances. Deitrich, the Patriot League leader in caused turnovers, came up with five steals and seven ground balls while also contributing a goal and an assist. Barry had four caused turnovers and four ground balls. All told the Bison were credited with 21 caused turnovers on 26 Lafayette miscues.
Maria Drehwing (three goals, two assists) and Courtney Bryan (two goals, three assists) both had five-point games for Lafayette (1-15, 0-5). Kristin Ruminski and Emily Archibald both tallied two goals and an assist.
The Leopards scored first on Drehwing's goal just 2:19 into the contest, but the Bison rattled off the next 10 goals in a row to take control. Donohue scored from a tough angle on the right side of the cage after a feed from Erin Weinstein to even the game, and Buechel's spin move followed by a hard, high shot produced the go-ahead tally moments later.
Bucknell's first six goals of the game came from six different scorers. Collins' goal off an assist from Buechel capped a run of 10 goals in 13:52 and gave the Bison a commanding 10-1 lead. Sydney Peyser temporarily stopped Bucknell's momentum with a goal at the 12:06 mark, but Casan Van Langen (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) started another six-goal run with her third of the season just 14 seconds later.
Buechel made it a 10-goal lead at the 10:22 mark, and Stephanie Stevens (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) scored with 1:13 left in the half to make it 16-2. Lafayette scored twice in 12 seconds in the final minute of the period to pull within 16-4 at the break.
Every Bucknell player saw action in the second half. Peters scored only 15 seconds into the half before the Bison began to slow things down.
Bucknell outshot Lafayette 30-28 and won the ground ball battle 23-16. The Bison converted on 3 of 4 free-position shots and received nine saves from goalie Katie Hartsock (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga). Lafayette doubled up Bucknell on the draws, 22-11.
Bucknell defeated Lafayette on the field for only the second time in series history and for the first time at home. The Bison won 16-9 in Easton in 2004 and also picked up a forfeit victory in 2005. The Leopards now lead the all-time series 27-3.
Despite the victory, Bucknell was eliminated from Patriot League Tournament contention based on Holy Cross' 11-5 win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon. The Bison will finish up the 2007 season on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. home game against Ohio State.
