LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kirsten Slahor handed out six assists and Jessica Patane, Amanda Shimp and Kelly Haggerty scored three goals apiece to lead Ohio State to a 17-4 victory over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at sun-splashed Graham Field. Bucknell, which received a goal and two assists from Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay), had its two-game winning streak come to an end and finishes the 2007 season with a 7-9 record.
Ohio State, ranked just outside the top-25 and coming off an impressive win at Penn State on Friday night, improved to 9-5 on the season. The Buckeyes scored on their first 11 shots of the day and on 15 of 20 shots in the first half to take a 15-3 lead into the locker room.
Collins' unassisted goal just 1:35 into the game tied it at 1-1, but the Buckeyes scored the next four goals and nine of the next 10 to take control. In a span of only 2:12, Slahor found three straight cutters in Keri Yourick, Haggerty and Patane for point-blank goals to make it a 4-1 game. Haggerty's second of the day made it 5-1 before Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored her 11th goal of the week and 31st of the season for the Bison.
Ohio State simply had too much speed, however, as evidenced by Libby Graf's interception and 60-yard sprint to the goal for the Buckeye's 11th goal of the half with 11:30 remaining. Patane's buzzer-beater off Slahor's sixth assist of the half made it 15-3.
It was a rough first half for both goalies, as there was only one save for each side in the opening 30 minutes, but Bucknell's Katie Hartsock (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Ohio State's Joy Demarco both got hot in the second half. Hartsock made seven saves in the second period and eight overall, while DeMarco, who relieved starter Kristen Gilwee in the game's 19th minute, had seven total saves, six in the second half.
Ohio State slowed the pace in the second half and both teams used their entire bench. Jacqueline Cook and Mallory Mayhew scored for the Buckeyes in the first five minutes of the half, while Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) added a goal for the Bison with 12:34 to play.
Buechel extended her point-scoring streak to 20 games in a row, with the tally, and she finished her outstanding sophomore season with 36 goals and 13 assists for 49 points. It was the most points in a season for a Bucknell player since Meredith Wright had 54 in 2004. Buechel also had two more draw controls on Sunday, giving her a league-high 51 on the year.
Freshman Alison Heffernan (Malvern, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) had a goal and three draw controls.
