BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Bucknell women's lacrosse dominated Lehigh on Saturday as it defeated the Mountain Hawks 16-3 to earn its first road win at Lehigh since 2009. The win improved Bucknell's record to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League. The six wins tie head coach Jackie Dando's single season win total, with five more games left to play in the regular season.
A major difference maker in the contest came from Lehigh's shots on goal compared to Bucknell's goals scored as the Mountain Hawks only had 14 shots on goal compared to the Bison's 16 goals scored and 20 shots on goal.
Megan Krestinski led Bucknell in its scoring efforts as she notched eight points on five goals and three assists, leading in all three categories. Caroline Sheridan was the other Bison to notch a hat-trick in the game for Bucknell as she tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Caleigh Cummiskey (three-points), Katie Browne and Alex Nesbitt (three-points) each recorded two goals. Regan Sansiviero and Sloane Ricciuti rounded out scoring with one apiece as Ricciuti scored her first career goal to close out the contest.
Bucknell's defense held strong throughout the game as it allowed just three goals and 14 shots on goal. Megan Krestinski and Jess Leon led the Bison in caused turnovers with two apiece as seven different Bison were able to come up with one. Bucknell dominated in ground balls as well as it recorded 25 to Lehigh's 19. Alex Nesbitt led the Bison in the category with four ground balls and Krestinski, Leon and Sansiviero each had three apiece to follow.
Bucknell was able to dominate several aspects of the game, with a good amount of its goals coming off of its pressure on the ride and coinciding goals off of the transition. The Bison forced Lehigh to go just 15-for-20 on clear attempts as it went 19-for-22.
Bella Crowley had another big day in the back of the net for Bucknell as she faced several point-blank shots and was able to end the game with just three goals against and seven saves for a .700 save percentage in the contest.
The first quarter was all Bucknell as it opened the game on a 6-0 scoring run with Caleigh Cummiskey and Megan Krestinski each finding the net twice. Lehigh didn't have a shot on goal for the first seven minutes of the game, but it found the back of the net with two minutes remaining to get on the board with the Bison leading 6-1. The second quarter proved to be a much more defensive battle as the Bison just out-scored the Mountain Hawks 2-1 to maintain an 8-2 lead at the half. Bella Crowley was a steady presence in the net for Bucknell as she notched four big saves in the first half to allow the Bison offense to shine. Bucknell blanked Lehigh 4-0 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 10 after the first ten minutes of the quarter went scoreless. The Mountain Hawks entered the fourth quarter on a 20 minute scoreless streak.
After three scoreless minutes that featured saves from both goalies as well as some solid defensive plays, Caleigh Cummiskey got the game started with a free-position goal three-minutes in. A couple of scoreless minutes later, Bucknell moved quickly in transition off of a caused turnover and Caroline Sheridan found Alex Nesbitt in front of the net to make it 2-0 as a timeout was called on the field with 9:29 left in the first. Cummiskey then got fouled for a second time and made her second free-position goal of the day. Less than a minute later, Megan Krestinski found a lane and got her first of the day to make it 4-0 and force Lehigh to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, Krestinski was fouled and buried her free-position shot down low to make it a five goal lead for Bucknell with 7:03 remaining in the first. Two and a half minutes later, Katie Browne found a quick stick goal to make it 6-0. A little over two minutes after that goal, Lehigh found its first of the day at the hands of Grace Martel to make it 6-1 at the end of the first.
Four minutes into the second quarter Krestinski was fouled and on her free-position shot she backed off the line and dumped it to Sheridan to make it a 7-1 lead with 11:19 left in the first quarter. After that goal, the defensive efforts bolstered and over six minutes went by scoreless as both goalies came up with a couple of point-blank saves to keep it a six-goal game. With 5:16 left in the half, Molly Snow was fouled and buried her free-position shot to make it 7-2 at the media timeout. With 3:19 remaining, Krestinski got the ball off of a caused turnover and pushed the pace in transition as she found Sheridan for a goal as she won the one-on-one with the goalie to give Bucknell an 8-2 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was a true defensive showcase as the first ten minutes of the quarter went scoreless before Krestinski found back-to-back goals. The first came off of a man-up opportunity as Sansiviero found the senior cutting through the middle and on the second goal Krestinski found the back of the net after finding a gap in Lehigh's zone and firing a shot down low. Quickly after, as the Bison got their sixth consecutive draw control, Nesbitt got her second goal of the game to make it 11-2 with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter. To end the third quarter, Regan Sansiviero got her name on the board for Bucknell as she notched a goal off of yet another caused turnover in transition and Crowley got a huge save with a couple of seconds remaining to ice the Mountain Hawks in the quarter. Out of the break, four minutes went scoreless before Sheridan reeled in her hattrick and extended Bucknell's lead to 12.
Bucknell's offense didn't slow down as it opened the fourth with a quick goal from Browne. After Lehigh went scoreless for just over 20 minutes, Snow got it back on the board in the fourth to cut the deficit back to 10. It wouldn't last for long however as Krestinski quickly answered with her fifth goal of the game to make it 14-3 at the media timeout. With about five minutes left to play, Sheridan tallied her third of the game to make it 15-3. Bucknell closed out the game with Sloane Ricciuiti earning her career-first goal as she ended the contest by making it 16-3.
The Bison are now on a two-game winning streak in the Patriot League and will stick to the road as they next travel to Worcester to face Holy Cross on Saturday, April 4 at noon.
