NIAGARA, N.Y. - For the second year in a row, the Bucknell and Niagara women's lacrosse teams met, and for the second consecutive year, Bucknell came away with the victory, this time a 17-9 defeat at Niagara on Saturday, March 30. Senior Melissa Montefusco had an impressive game for the Orange and Blue, recording seven goals and five assists for a hand in 12 of BU's 17 scores.
The Bison got the first goal of the game when Meredith Wright scored an unassisted goal only 6:01 into the contest to give Bucknell the early 1-0 lead. Just under two minutes later, the Purple Eagles evened it as Laurie Haefner scored her first of three goals on the day at the 7:52 mark.
The two teams battled back and forth, neither team leading by more than two goals in the first half. The halftime score saw the squads deadlocked at 6-6.
Bucknell responded from the halftime break by rattling off six straight goals, four coming courtesy of Montefusco, in a little over 15 minutes to take control of the game. The Purple Eagles had several opportunities to get within striking distance, but fell victim to solid Bison goaltending as Nicole Kallis recorded 12 saves.
In addition to Montefusco's seven goals, freshman Andrea Paraud and sophomore Amy Hasler were also multiple goal scorers in the contest, tallying four and three respectively.
Ashley Grosso led all Niagara scorers with four points on two goals and two assists, and freshman Michelle Nucci made eight saves in 50:34 worth of work between the pipes for the Purple Eagles.
Bucknell improves to 5-4 overall and returns home to host Monmouth on Tuesday, April 2, for a 6:00 p.m. game. Niagara falls to 2-3 overall.
