LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell tallied two quick goals in the second half to break open a 4-4 halftime tie, and the Bison never looked back on the way to a 9-6 victory over Monmouth in Lewisburg, Pa., on Tuesday, April 2. It was the first time in the last five meetings that the Orange and Blue have defeated the Hawks.
Monmouth got on the board early when Stacy Sydlo tallied unassisted just :45 seconds into the contest. Just over a minute later, the Hawks saw their lead extend to 2-0 when Beka Murphy found Meg Brown for a score 1:48 into it.
The Bison responded, however, scoring four unanswered over a four minute span to go ahead, 4-2. Senior Melissa Montefusco got Bucknell on the board with an unassisted goal with 19:50 to play in the half. A little over a minute later, Montefusco connected with sophomore Meredith Wright to tie the contest, 2-2. The duo hooked up again to give the Orange and Blue a 3-2 lead just :44 seconds later. The Bucknell run came to a close after freshman Andrea Paraud found sophomore Laura Seiboth with 15:46 left in the frame for the 4-2 advantage.
Steph LaGrossa got the visitors within one, 3-2, with an unassisted goal at the 8:02 mark of the first. The Hawks tied the contest with 2:56 remaining in the half when Sydlo snuck her second of the game past Bucknell goalkeeper Nicole Kallis.
It was only 1:17 into the second half when Seiboth found junior Suzanne Raffaele in front of the net to give BU the 5-4 lead. The Bison quickly extended their advantage to 6-4 just :36 seconds later when sophomore Amy Hasler netted a pass from Montefusco. Monmouth would not go down without a fight, and Kerry Pohmer cut it to one, 6-5, 1:14 later. Both teams went quiet offensively for nearly 10 minutes before Raffaele scored her second of the night to put the host team ahead, 7-5. The Hawks responded again, scoring seven minutes later when Sydlo notched her third score of the evening.
Raffaele gave Bucknell some breathing room with her third score of the evening with 8:16 to play, making it 8-6 in BU's favor. Montefusco found Hasler again with 1:02 left in the contest to finish off the scoring for the game.
Kallis was solid in net, making 18 saves on 35 Monmouth shots. Stacy Makris played the entire game between the pipes for the Hawks, making 11 stops on 23 Bucknell shots.
The Bison improve to 6-4 overall and head to Holy Cross for a crucial Patriot League contest against the Crusaders on Saturday, April 6, at 12:00 p.m. Monmouth falls to 4-5 overall.
