LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Navy on Saturday at Depew Field at Marren Park. The Bison led in both games, but the Midshipmen rallied to come back as Navy slid past Bucknell in the Patriot League standings.
With Navy's (29-14, 15-7 PL) two wins, the Mids take sole possession of first place in the Patriot League with four conference games remaining. Army (24-17, 14-8 PL) also took both games of a doubleheader from Lafayette to grab a hold of second place. Bucknell (21-21, 14-8 PL) is tied in the standings with Army, but the Black Knights hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Holy Cross (18-25, 12-11 PL) got back within 2.5 games of the Bison.
Garrett Mathias notched his seventh home run of the season as part of a four-hit day for the freshman. Mathias was 3-for-4 with an RBI in game one before launching a solo shot in game two. John Calabrese also had a four-hit day with two hits in each game. He doubled in each game, including a two-run double in game one.
The Bison totaled 14 hits between the two games while Navy had 10 hits in each game. The Bison made one error in game one while the Mids made one error in game two.
Bucknell and Navy will play the series finale at Depew Field at Marren Park on Monday at 1 p.m.
Game One: Navy 9, Bucknell 4 (7 innings)
The Bison jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning, but the Mids scored nine unanswered runs, including seven in the fifth and sixth innings to storm back for the game one win.
Calabrese walked and Zach Selfon singled with one out to get two on for the Bison. Navy got a big second out, but an error in the next at-bat brought Calabrese home to give the Bison an early lead. It was Calabrese again in the second inning coming through with a hard-hit two-run double to make it 3-0.
Navy got its first hit of the game off of Jake Schultz in the fourth inning with two outs, and rallied to bring in a run. A walk put runners on first and second, and a single by Andrew Manning drove in the run to get on the board.
The game flipped in the fifth as Navy chased Schultz with one out in the fifth. The Mids cut the lead to 3-2 before the Bison brought on closer Hadley Maxwell into the game with the bases loaded and two outs. Manning drew a walk to tie the game, and a two-run single by Chris Klug gave Navy a 5-3 lead.
Navy got three more in the sixth inning on RBI singles by Victor Izquierdo, Patrick Walsh and Manning to extend the lead to 8-3. An RBI double by Will Howard gave the Mids a ninth run in the seventh.
The Bison got one back in the seventh on an RBI single by Mathias, but the rally was too late as Navy closed out the win comfortably.
Game Two: Navy 5, Bucknell 3
Brady Hoar tossed his fifth quality start of the season, but the Bison offense could not get going in game two as Navy took a 5-3 victory in nine innings.
Hoar allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over six innings. Navy's Matt Archibald surrendered just a solo home run in four innings but was removed from the game with an injury after four innings. Owen Phypers tossed the final five innings of the game as the righthander earned his fifth win of the year.
Mathias led off the second inning with his seventh home run of the season and his second against Navy. Hoar allowed just two hits through the first four innings until Navy tied the game 1-1 with a home run by Jake Hooten. The rally continued with two outs as a single and a double gave Navy a 2-1 lead.
Bucknell answered immediately with two runs off of Phypers in the fifth. Selfon led off the inning with a single, and Lleyton Coupe roped a triple down the right field line to tie the game. Phypers struck out two batters, but Billy Fluharty came through with a two-out single to give the Bison the lead right back.
The Bison missed a big opportunity in the sixth as they stranded the bases loaded. Lagoni and Mathias walked to lead off the inning, and a bunt single by Calabrese loaded the bags. Navy got an out at the plate, and Phypers worked a punch out and a fly out to escape the jam.
Navy took the lead back with a three-run eighth inning. The first four batter reached base, and hits by Walsh and Manning drove in runs. The Mids made it 5-3 as a run came to score on a squeeze bunt.
