Baseball Outlasts Navy in 13 Innings to Create Three-Way Tie for First in Patriot League; Tuesday’s Game at Cornell Canceled

**NOTE: Tuesday's scheduled game at Cornell has been canceled and will not be made up.**
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell and Navy played a marathon series finale on Monday afternoon at Depew Field, and Bison relievers Bryce Mitchell and Hadley Maxwell were rewarded for sensational outings when Zach Selfon walked it off with an RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning.
Bucknell bounced back after letting a pair of leads slip away in Navy's doubleheader sweep on Sunday, and the Bison moved back into a three-way tie for first place in the Patriot League standings. Bucknell, Navy, and Army are all 15-8 with three games remaining in the regular season. The Midshipmen host the Black Knights in Annapolis next weekend, while the Bison finish up at fifth-place Lehigh (7-16). Bucknell has already clinched a Patriot League Tournament berth but is working to host at least a semifinal series.
Monday's game was played in ideal weather conditions, and the two teams traded blows throughout the early part of the contest. Bucknell scored single runs in four of its first five at bats, while Navy put a run on the board in four of its first seven times up.
Down 2-1 in the third inning, the Bison tied it on an RBI single by John Calabrese, who drove in three runs on the day. Bucknell took its first lead with two outs in the fourth, catching a break when the Navy right fielder lost a Michael Trommer fly ball in the sun and turned it into an RBI triple. Garrett Mathias tripled leading off the fifth inning, and Calabrese's second sacrifice fly of the game gave the Bison a 4-2 lead.
Freshman Tyler Seidman delivered a second straight strong start for the Bison. He pitched seven innings of one-hit ball in last Sunday's win at Army, and he yielded only two runs (one earned) in five innings in this one. Navy scratched out a couple of runs off Mikey Myro, however, pulling even at 4-4 on a long home run by Evan Brown leading off the top of the seventh.
Mitchell entered later in the inning with the bases loaded and one out and kept the game tied by inducing a force out at the plate and a soft fly ball to right. Mitchell worked two more scoreless frames before turning it over to Maxwell in the 10th, but Navy's bullpen was just as effective.
After the Bison touched starter Tyler Grenn for four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in five innings, Jackson Beattie, Jackson Clark, and Timmy Virtudes were all outstanding in relief.
Both teams stranded a runner in the ninth and 10th, and then Maxwell struck out the side in the 11th. The Bison went down 1-2-3 in the 11th but then had a great chance to win it in the 12th. A single and two walks loaded the bases with one out but Virtudes came on and got Billy Fluharty on a called third strike and Trommer on a fly ball to the warning track in center. Fluharty and Trommer combined to go 7-for-13 in the game.
Maxwell recorded two more strikeouts in the top of the 13th, and Bucknell finally ended the four hour, 37-minute affair in the bottom half. Garrett Mathias recorded his third hit of the day with a one-out single, and Chris Morabito entered as a pinch-runner. Virtudes recorded a strikeout for the second out before Selfon delivered the game-ending hit. With Navy's outfield playing very deep to prevent an extra-base hit, Selfon's fly ball to shallow left fell in untouched, and Morabito came all the way around from first with the winning run.
Bucknell matched its season high with 16 hits in the game. Fluharty went 4-for-6 and also drew a walk, giving him four-hit games on the season. All four have come in Patriot League play, including two against Navy. Trommer, Mathias, and Selfon all had three hits, and Calabrese set a career high with his three RBIs.
Brown, Tyler Cripe, and Noah Stead all had two hits for the Midshipmen, who finished with 11 in the game.
Maxwell's four-inning stint was his longest of the season, and he struck out five while allowing only two hits and no walks. The Patriot League saves leader (9) earned his first win of the season, and he lowered his ERA to 2.22.
Bucknell and Lehigh will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday in Bethlehem. The Bison swept a three-game set from the Mountain Hawks earlier in the year at Depew Field, winning three tight games by scores of 3-2, 6-3, and 12-11.
