LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell rowing team is back in action for the third straight weekend when it travels to Camden County, N.J., for the 27th running of the Knecht Cup Regatta. The Bison will have three eights in action on the Cooper River for one of the largest collegiate regattas on the East Coast. This year, 67 collegiate-level rowing programs are slated to compete in the two-day event.
Â
Bucknell's Varsity Eight will race at 4:33 p.m. on Saturday in the sixth heat of the 1V8+Â that also includes Robert Morris, George Mason, Georgetown, Monmouth, and Canisius. Each heat winner and the next 12 best times advance to the semifinals, which will be held on Sunday morning.
Â
The 3V8+ will be the first Bison boat on the water on Saturday at 2:06 p.m., racing in a heat with Boston College, George Mason, MIT, Wisconsin, and Delaware. The 2V8+ will follow at 2:27 p.m. in a section with MIT, Wisconsin, Mercyhurst, and Boston College.
Â
Last season, Bucknell had two eights and two fours in action at the Knecht Cup, and all four boats made the Grand Finals and finished in the top five. The 1V4+ and 2V8+ both placed third, and the 1V8+ and 2V4+ both finished fifth.
Â
The Bison were scheduled to race at home last Saturday, but elevated water levels on the Susquehanna River necessitated moving the home competition with Lehigh, Drexel, and George Washington to Philadelphia. Bucknell's top two Eights both went 2-0 on the day, beating Drexel and GW, and the 1V8+ earned Patriot League Boat of the Week honors. That top crew beat Patriot League rivals MIT and Holy Cross the previous week and is unbeaten early in the season.
Â
Following the Knecht Cup, the Bison will have two more competitions leading up to the Patriot League Championships, which will be back on the Cooper River on May 15. Bucknell will race Cornell, Rhode Island, and Delaware on Apr. 18 in Ithaca, N.Y., and the Bison will return to the Women's Sprints in Worcester, Mass., on May 3.
