LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell women's lacrosse kept it close for the first three quarters of play, but ultimately fell to Arizona State 19-12 on Sunday afternoon in Tempe. The draw control ratio proved to be one of the main differences in the Sun Devils victory as they out-paced Bucknell 24-9 in the category, creating more Arizona State offensive opportunities.
With the loss, the Bison fall to 4-2 on the season. Bucknell's two losses came against top-tier teams in Penn State and Arizona State.
Katie Browne led the Bison in scoring with four goals on five shots. Caleigh Cummiskey followed closely behind as she notched three goals, Gigi Abernethy and Alex Macutek each had two goals and Caroline Sheridan rounded out Bucknell scoring with one. ASU was led by Linda Oldknow, who finished the game with eight goals and two assists.
Megan Krestinski and Sheridan led the team in assists with two each. Cummiskey and Abernethy rounded out Bucknell's six assists with one apiece.
On defense, the Bison were able to stand tall in big moments to limit the damage from ASU and keep the game close. Jess Leon and Kate Hearns led the Bison in ground balls with three each and Macutek notched a team-high two caused turnovers in the game.
Bella Crowley had a big day in the back of the net despite the 19 goals against as she recorded 11 saves and a .367 save percentage against a strong Sun Devil offense.
The Bison out-paced the Sun Devils 5-2 in caused turnovers and recorded less turnovers than ASU with 14 to their 17.
The first quarter opened with back-and-forth play and a 2-2 scoreline before the Sun Devils capitalized on a 7 to 1 draw control ratio to score four unanswered goals and take a 5-2 lead. Bucknell was able to find a couple more draw controls in the second quarter and brought it back to a two point game, but the final 1:30 went all Arizona State as it had three straight goals to go into halftime up by five. The third quarter was a pretty even endeavor as the Bison out-scored the Sun Devils 4-3, thanks to a three-goal run to end the stanza and cut the deficit to four. Arizona State held and extended its lead in fourth, out-scoring Bucknell 5-2 and earning the victory in Tempe.
The Sun Devils opened the game with a Teegan Ng goal two minutes in, but Gigi Abernethy then found the back of the goal on a man-up opportunity off of a Caroline Sheridan assist to make it a 1-1 game. Almost four minutes of missed shots and defensive plays later, Caleigh Cummiskey found her first goal of the game to put Bucknell up 2-1. The Bison struggled on the draw in the first as they only found one draw win to Arizona State's seven, which allowed the Sun Devils to score four unanswered goals to end the first quarter with a 5-2 lead.
Arizona State continued its scoring prowess with a goal to open the second quarter, but Alex Macutek answered with a free-position goal to keep the deficit at three. The Sun Devils then went on a 2-0 run before Katie Browne scored off of a nice feed from Cummiskey to make it a four goal game with 8:31 left in the half. After almost three minutes of solid defensive play on both sides, Browne found her second consecutive goal to cut the deficit to three at the media timeout. Out of the break, Cummiskey extended Bucknell's scoring run to three with a tough-angled goal to make it a two point game. The Sun Devils then answered with three straight goals in the final minute and a half of the second quarter to take an 11-6 lead into halftime.
Abernethy opened the second half the same as the first as she scored off of a Sheridan assist to cut the deficit to four, but Arizona State responded with three straight to go up 14-7. Bucknell then went on a 3-0 run with goals from Cummiskey, Browne off of a nice feed from Abernethy and Sheridan off of a crease wraparound to make it a four goal game with 1:24 left in the third quarter. The scoring run resulted in a timeout called by Arizona State and the rest of the quarter would go scoreless as the Sun Devils took a 14-10 lead into the final stanza.
The fourth quarter opened with over three minutes of scoreless play before Oldknow got three straight goals for the Sun Devils to make it 17-10 with 6:33 remaining in regulation. A couple minutes later, Shevitz added a goal for Arizona State to make it an eight goal lead with just under four minutes left to play. Bucknell found its first goal of the quarter with 2:22 left in the game as Browne perfectly timed a one-touch goal off of a Megan Krestinski assist. Ng then made another goal for the Sun Devils to make it 19-11. Macutek had the last word of the game as she notched a final goal for the Bison with five seconds to cut the deficit to seven as Arizona State would take the win 19-12.
