LEWISBURG, Pa. – Come-from-behind singles wins from Liam Kilmer and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega highlighted the Bucknell men's tennis team's 5-2 victory over Villanova on Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Bison climbed back over .500 at 10-9 with only Patriot League matches remaining on the regular-season schedule.
After the two teams split the first two doubles matches to finish, Bucknell's top pair of Brendan McDonald and Amar Tahirovic clinched the point with a 7-5 win over Ethan Carr and Cooper Gordon. The Villanova duo rallied from 4-1 down to draw even, but McDonald and Tahirovic closed it out with a service break.
Bucknell also won at No. 2 doubles, a 6-3 verdict from Nelson Alapi and Will Robinson over Kush Anand and Thomas Wakefield.
Wakefield and James Quincy Jones got the Wildcats on the board with wins at 5 and 6 singles, but the Bison won each of the top four. Tahirovic was tested at No. 1 by Gordon, winning the first set in a tiebreaker before taking the second set 6-2. Gordon won the first three points in the tiebreaker before Tahirovic captured the last seven.
Robinson was also a straight-set winner, 6-4, 6-1 over Anand at No. 4. Kilmer and Bain both dropped their first sets before storming back. Kilmer beat Monahan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, and Bain came from behind to beat Carr 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Bison are home again next week against Colgate at 2 p.m. The team will honor its record-setting senior class prior to the match.
