SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Davis McDonald won the last match remaining on the courts, a three-setter at No. 6 singles, to lift Army West Point to a 4-3 win over Bucknell on Saturday at the Central PA Tennis Center. The Bison fell to 9-9 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights improved to 15-7, 3-0.
Bucknell started the day by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega and Adam Stavrakas won 6-4 on Court 3, and Nelson Alapi and Will Robinson clinched it with a 7-5 verdict over Jimin Jung and Matias Feoli. The top tandem of Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald led 6-5 when the point was clinched.
Three of the six singles matches went to three sets. Stavrakas came from a set down to beat Jung 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2, and the Bison also earned a point from McDonald's 6-3, 6-4 win over Marcus Sebastian at No. 5.
Alan Ton at No. 3 and Feoli at No. 4 won in straight sets for Army, and then the Black Knights got a critical point when Jackson Armistead knocked off Tahirovic in a battle of First Team All-Patriot Leaguers, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1. That set up Davis McDonald for the match-clincher on Court 6. Robinson remained alive by winning the second set in a tiebreaker, but McDonald won the first five games of the third set.
The Black Knights avenged a loss to Bucknell last season, which ended their 34-match series winning streak.
Bucknell returns to action on Sunday at home against Villanova. The contest is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Courts on campus.
