Baseball Wins Fifth Straight; Takes Series From Lehigh With 6-3 Victory

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Hadley Maxwell escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to earn his third save of the week as the Bison held on for a 6-3 win over Lehigh to take the series at Depew Field at Marren Park on Saturday afternoon. The Bison have won five straight games and have won nine of their last 10 games. Bucknell's 7-1 start in Patriot League play is its best start 2014 — the last time that the Bison won the Patriot League.
Jake Schultz got the start and pitched 3.2 solid innings on the mound as the Bison built a 4-1 lead. The junior, who was operating on a pitch count, nearly got through four scoreless innings before he was chased in the third. Mikey Myro pitched 3.1 innings in relief to hold the Bison lead. Myro allowed two runs on four hits before Bryce Mitchell pitched a shut-down eighth inning. Maxwell got himself into trouble in the ninth, but a great play by Zach Selfon ended the ballgame.
Bucknell came out hot out of the gates as Billy Fluharty triples and Michael Trommer was hit with a pitch to put runners on the corners with no outs. Ty Lagoni gave the Bison an early lead with a sacrifice fly. Schultz tossed 2.2 scoreless innings before Lehigh got its first hit of the game in the third inning.
The Bison rallied again in the third, this time for three runs to open up a 4-0 lead. With two outs and Fluharty on first, Lagoni roped a double into left field to bring home the speedy Fluharty. Michael Chiaravallo followed up with an RBI single, and Garrett Mathias made it three consecutive RBI hits with a single into right field.
Schultx had two outs in the fourth before an RBI single by Robbie Carvelli got the Mountain Hawks on the board. Myro then forced a fly out to end the inning with minimal damage before tossing 1-2-3 fifth.
The Bison put together another two-out rally in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-1. Lagoni singled through the left side, then stole second to move into scoring position. Chiaravallo drew a walk, setting up another big RBI single by Mathias to left field. Lagoni came in to score easily, but the throw came into to third with nobody occupying the bag. Chiaravallo came in to score as the ball made its way into the Bucknell dugout.
Lehigh cut the deficit to 6-3 with two runs in the top of the sixth. Tristan Crawford drove in a run on an RBI single and put runners in the corners before a strange play went in Bucknell's favor. A weak groundball up the middle got the out at second, but the runner from first was called for interference to result in a double play. The runner from third was forced to come back from third due to the interference. That runner scored anyways as Ian Wirtz singled to bring in the run.
Myro ended his day with a scoreless seventh, stranding two runners to hold Bucknell's lead. Mitchell then turned in a dominant inning, ending the frame with a strikeout looking.
Maxwell struck out the first batter he faced before a walk and a single put runners on first and second. He struck out another for the second out before another single loaded the bases. Lagoni made a diving stop on the single, and Facinelli made a great stop at first base to make sure the ball did not get away. Both plays saved a run before Maxwell forced a weak ground ball to Zach Selfon at third.
Maxwell earned his sixth save of the season and his ninth career save. He is now tied for fifth in program history in single-season saves and career saves. The senior is 6-for-6 in save opportunities this season.
Lagoni and Mathias both had two hits on the day with two RBIs. Mathias now has a 10-game hit streak and a 22-game on-base streak. Lagoni leads the Bison with 18 RBIs this season and is on a four-game hit streak.
Michael Trommer, Billy Fluharty Andrew Swenson and Michael Chiaravallo all had a hit in the game to round out Bucknell's eight hits.
