Bucknell's (14-11, 8-1 PL) 8-1 start in the Patriot League is the best start to conference play since the Bison began the season 9-0 in Patriot League action back in 2001 under head coach Gene Depew.
After a five-run sixth inning by the Bison tied the game up 11-11, the series finale quieted as both teams went scoreless in the seventh and eighth due to the pitching of Bryce Mitchell and Max Treonze. After entering the game and giving up a three-run homer to Owen Walewander, Mitchell did not allow another hit for the remainder of the game to shut down a Lehigh offense that found its groove.
Walewander, who homered twice with a grand slam in the fourth, came back up in the eighth in a tie game. Mitchell struck him out on three pitches in a scoreless inning before a 1-2-3 ninth inning set up the Bison for a walk-off opportunity.
Lehigh recorded an out in the ninth before Zach Selfon lined a single to right field. Lleyton Coupe drew a walk to move Selfon into scoring position, but a strikeout gave Lehigh its second out. Swenson came up to the plate and aggressively roped the first pitch he saw into right-center field to win the ballgame.
Mitchell earned his second win of the week after earning the win with three solid innings at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday. The sophomore also tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning in Bucknell's 6-3 win over Lehigh in game two. Mitchell finished with a line of 4.0 innings, one hit, one earned run and four strikeouts.
Ty Lagoni had a clutch day for the Bison with two two-run hits to tie the game up in the first and sixth inning. The junior was 2-for-6 at the plate with four RBIs and a run scored.
After a two-run top of the first, the Bison answered with six runs in the bottom half and chased two Lehigh pitchers. Fluharty wore the first pitch of the game before Trommer singled to set up a two-run triple by Lagoni to tie it up 2-2. Garrett Mathias then drove in a run reaching on an error as the groundball would have scored the run regardless for a 3-2 lead.
The rally continued as Lleyton Coupe and John Calabrese drew free bases to load the bags. With two outs, Deacon Bowne drew a walk to bring in a run and Fluharty came back around the order drive in two more.

Lehigh cut the Bison lead to 6-4 with two runs in the third inning. The Mountain Hawks chased Brady Hoar in the fourth as they loaded the bases with two outs. Walewander came up and crushed a grand slam to right field to give Lehigh an 8-6 lead. The catcher came back up with two runners on in the sixth, hitting another big home run to left field to extend the lead to 11-6.
The Bison answered quickly with the five-run sixth inning. Coupe singled, and Selfon and Calabrese drew free bases to load the bags with one out. Swenson was hit with a pitch to bring in a run and chase Cole Kochanowicz who had tossed two scoreless innings. Bowne roped the first pitch he saw into left field for a two-run double to cut the deficit to two runs. Lagoni came through again with a two-run single up the middle to tie the game 11-11.

Swenson's game-winner was Bucknell's second walk-off of the season after Calabrese drew a bases-loaded walk in a 6-5 win over Merrimack back in February.
All nine starters in the Bison lineup had a hit in the ballgame as both teams finished with 11 hits. Michael Trommer was 2-for-3 in the game with two walks. Bowne drove in three runs, and Swenson and Fluharty drove in two runs.

Calabrese was 1-for-2 with a bunt single and three walks. The rightfielder made a fiving catch in the eigth inning to prevent extra bases. Swenson and Fluharty both wore two pitches on the day as the Bison earned six free bases on hit-batters. The Bison drew 10 walks and pitchers surrendered six walks. Bucknell left 13 runners on base and Lehigh left seven on base.
The Bison welcomed Martin Wrobel, his family and the Geisinger Medical Staff of the Janet Weis Children's Hospital to the game. Martin rounded the bases after the second inning as Lehigh, Bucknell, Martin's family and Geisinger staff cheered him on. Read more about Martin below.
Bucknell is back at Depew Field at Marren Park on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. to host La Salle before the Bison continue Patriot League action with a three-game series at Lafayette next weekend.
Martin Wrobel of Ashland, Pennsylvania was 2 years old when a high fever led to a trip to the emergency room at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. In the hospital, he began having seizures and was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where the staff determined he had bacterial meningitis.
Martin's infection caused multiple mini-strokes that led to profound hearing loss. Martin underwent cochlear implant surgery, speech therapy and was a 2019 Miracle Kid. Today, at 11 years old, Martin has been without medical issues for more than 8 years. He recently received the newest cochlear implants without any issues and has regular follow-ups with ENT and Dr. William Azerado.
He just finished an undefeated wrestling season where he was the only deaf wrestler in the league and came in first place at the Coal Cracker League Tournament. He now turns his attention to a new season of baseball, where he was named to the Ashland All-Star baseball team last season.
The cochlear implant program at Geisinger Janet Weis Children's Hospital was started with generous donations to the children's hospital through Children's Miracle Network at Geisinger.
Martin was joined on the field by Dr. Richard Lambert, Director Physician of Pediatric Critical Care, at first base. Mike McCullen, Corporate Communications Specialist, at second base. Kristen Kowaleski, Development Specialist with Children's Miracle Network at Geisinger, at third base. At home plate was mother Alexis Groody and his step-father Phil Groody.
