EMMITSBURG, Md. – Ty Lagoni's two-run single in the top of the seventh inning gave Bucknell the lead for good, and Garrett Mathias and Ryan Facinelli provided important insurance runs with long homers, helping the Bison edge Mount St. Mary's 7-6 in a non-league contest on Tuesday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
Bryce Mitchell earned his first career win with three strong innings in relief, and Hadley Maxwell notched his fourth save of the season for the Bison, who have now won six of their last seven.
Bucknell got out of the gates quickly, plating three runs within the first five batters of the game, but the Bison didn't score again until they had to rally from behind in the late innings. Down 4-3 after Sam Meyer's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, 9-hole hitter Deacon Bowne got the winning rally started by working a walk after falling behind in the count 0-2.
Bowne moved up on a ground ball, and then Mount St. Mary's elected to intentionally walk Michael Trommer, who went 2-for-3 on the day to raise his season average to .329. The move backfired as both runners immediately advanced on a wild pitch, and then Lagoni smashed a 3-2 breaking ball back up the middle to plate two and give the Bison a 5-4 lead. Lagoni was gunned down by the catcher trying to move up on the throw, and that was a big play for the Mountaineers as Mathias crushed a 1-2 pitch well over the wall in right to make it 6-4.
Mount St. Mary's scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, as the first two batters reached on a hit-by-pitch and an error. The Bison nearly turned a triple play to escape the jam. With both runners in motion, freshman Brady Green, making his first career start, started a well-turned 4-6-3 double play. Pinch-runner Mike Toth charged around third and just beat the throw home on a close play at the plate.
Facinelli got the run back in the top of the eighth with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to center that upped Bucknell's lead to 7-5. The Bison would need the insurance, as Mount St. Mary's rallied in the bottom half but ultimately ran themselves out of the inning.
The Mount loaded the bases with no outs on a walk, a hit batsman, and an infield single. Maxwell caught Meyer looking on a beautiful front-door breaking ball for the first out, but then Ty Fredo walked to force in a run. Mount St. Mary's tried a suicide squeeze, but Toth couldn't get the bat on a pitch that was low and away, and Bowne easily chased down Christian Bauman between third and home. Maxwell then retired Toth on a fly ball to left.
After needing 34 pitches to get through the eighth, Maxwell breezed through the ninth in only eight pitches, getting a strikeout and two ground balls to short for Bucknell's first 1-2-3 inning of the day.
It was a mid-week bullpen day for Bucknell, and five pitchers saw action. Tyler Seidman made his first career start and pitched two scoreless innings, and then Tyler Hawkins stranded a pair in a scoreless third inning. Ryan DeLaney came on in the fourth and retired the first two batters, but a dropped fly ball extended the inning, and Mount St. Mary's followed with three straight two-out hits to cut its deficit to 3-2.
Mitchell relieved DeLaney in the fifth with two on and a run already in, and he retired the next three in a row to keep it a 3-3 game. Mitchell helped himself out by fielding a sharp comebacker with runners at the corners and one out and running down David Stokely between third and home.
Billy Fluharty, who was coming off a four-hit game in Sunday's win at Navy, slapped Jackson Snyder's first pitch of the afternoon back up the middle for a base hit to ignite Bucknell's first-inning rally. Fluharty scored one batter later on Trommer's double into the right-field corner. After Lagoni walked, an errant pickoff throw to second allowed both runners to move up, and then the Bison plated two more on a Mathias ground out and a Michael Chiaravallo single.
Mount St. Mary's outhit Bucknell 9-8, and both teams drew seven walks on a chilly afternoon. The Bison, who are off to a 5-1 start in Patriot League play, improved to 10-11 overall. Mount St. Mary's, which started the year with a win over Missouri, fell to 10-12.
The Bison are right back on the road on Wednesday, visiting Penn State at 5:30 p.m. The game can be seen on BTN+.
