Baseball Shuts Out Penn State in 9-0 Road Win

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team shut out Penn State for the fourth time in program history in a 9-0 victory at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday night. Frankie Bilecki, Dante Pavone, and Mikey Myro combined to allow just five hits as the Bison hit up and down the lineup.
Bilecki tossed four scoreless innings in his first appearance of the year and his first career start, forcing nine fly outs in the game. Pavone earned the win with three scoreless innings where he allowed just one hit and struck out four batters. Myro closed out the ballgame with two perfect innings in the eighth and ninth. Altogether, the three Bison arms stranded 12 runners in the game.
Bucknell (11-11) came out of the gates as Billy Fluharty hit a leadoff single and Michael Trommer followed with his fifth homer of the season to give the Bison a quick 2-0 lead. Penn State (7-16) loaded the bases in the bottom half of the first, but Bilecki stranded all three runners.
The Bison put up a crooked number in the third with three runs to extend the lead to 5-0. Deacon Bowne led off the inning with a double and Fluharty and Trommer drew free bases to load the bags. Garrett Mathias drew a walk and Zach Selfon singled through the left side to score another. A good piece of hitting by Lleyton Coupe score the third run on a chopper to the left side.
Bilecki allowed two hits over his final three innings and stranded a baserunner in each frame. Selfon notched his second RBI of the day with a hard hit double down the line to score Ty Lagoni to make it 6-0.
Pavone got into some trouble in the fifth and sixth innings as Penn State threatened to score. The Nittany Lions loaded the bases in in the fifth with one out, but Pavone struck out two batters to strand all three runners. He then stranded two more in the sixth.
The Bison rallied again in the seventh for three more runs. Selfon singled and Coupe was hit with a pitch to bring up John Calabrese in a pinch-hit opportunity. The left-handed hitter drove a ball back up the middle to drive in Selfon. Fluharty came up later in the inning with the bases loaded two drive in two more with a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-0.
Pavone hit a batter in the seventh, but struck out two to end his day on the mound. Myro took over in the eighth to force four fly outs and two pop outs to close out the game.
Selfon was 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Fluharty had a two-hit day with two RBIs and two runs scored. Trommer drove in two runs with his homer in the first. The Bison had 12 hits in the game with eight different players getting a hit. The Bison made no errors in the field on a busy day defensively.
Bucknell has won seven of its last eight games and have won its last three contests. The Bison shut out Penn State for the first time since 2014 and the fourth time in program history. The other two shutouts came back in 1944 and 1964.
Bucknell is back at Depew Field at Marren Park after a five-game road stretch for a three-game series against Lehigh beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday.
