Baseball Hits the Road for Three-Game Series at Navy

The Bucknell baseball team continues Patriot League action this weekend for a three-game series at Navy at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Brothers Stadium. The Bison and Mids are set for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday followed by the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Bucknell is coming off a three-game sweep over Lafayette to open up the Patriot League slate. Navy dropped two games of a three-game series to Lehigh last weekend but are coming off of a thrilling 9-8 walk off win over Maine on Wednesday.

Bucknell won 8-5, 9-8 and 8-0 over the Leopards, and Ty Lagoni and Brady Hoar both earned Patriot League weekly honors. Lagoni was the PL Player of the Week after going 7-for-12 with five RBIs in the series. Hoar earned the PL Rookie of the Week honor after a quality start in Bucknell's shutout victory.

Navy's Matt Archibald was named the Pitcher of the Week after eighth shutout innings in a 3-0 victory in game two. Three different Navy pitchers have won the PL Pitcher of the Week and three different players have won the PL Rookie of the Week this season.

Last Time Out vs. Lafayette
- After a 4-10 start to the season in nonconference play, the Bison swept Lafayette in its Patriot League opening series at Depew field at Marren Park
- Bucknell opened with an 8-5 win behind seven strong innings from Jonathan Adelmann. The junior right-hander matched his career high that he set last week with seven innings and set a new career-high with 10 strikeouts. The Bison got out to a 5-0 lead before the Leopards cut it to 6-4 in the eighth. The Bison tacked on a couple insurance runs in the eighth and BU held on to win.
- After a four-run sixth by Lafayette opened up an 8-4 in game two, the Bison answered with four runs in the bottom half to tie the game. Michael Chiaravallo's pinch-hit double in the eighth inning gave the Bison a 9-8 lead, and freshman Liam Jones earned his first career save to close out the ninth.
- Brady Hoar earned his second win of the year with six shutout innings with a career-high seven strikeouts. Hoar allowed three hits and five walks but stranded eight baserunners. Jake Schultz made his return to Depew Field for the first time since 2024 to toss two scoreless innings in relief. Hadley Maxwell shutdown the ninth to give the Bison its first shutout win of the year.
- Bucknell is hitting .242 at the plate and pitchers have posted a 6.97 team ERA. Opponents are hitting .300 against the Bison and pitchers have a 4.64 ERA.
- Outfielder Michael Trommer is hitting .348/.427/.636 for a 1.063 OPS. He has four home runs, eight RBIs and 15 runs scored along with eight multi-hit games. The senior has seven doubles, including three in the series against Lafayette. He went 3-for-5 in games one and three of the series. Â
- Freshman DH and first baseman Garrett Mathias is hitting .333/.440/.452 to begin his collegiate career. He is 14-for-42 at the plate and is tied for second on the team with eight RBIs.
- Outfielder Michael Chiaravallo is hitting .310 in eight starts. He's played in 14 games and has been regularly used in pinch-hitting scenarios. The junior has two home runs and eight RBIs this season. Â
- Right fielder John Calabrese is hitting .290 in 14 games played. Calabrese is second on the team with five doubles, and all four of his hits in the series against Lafayette were doubles. The sophomore has five RBIs for the Bison.
- Ty Lagoni is second on the team with 18 hits and eight RBIs in all 17 games. The transfer upped his average to .281 after a 7-for-12 performance in the Lafayette series. Lagoni was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in game one, and tied game two up with a two-run single in the sixth. The shortstop is 4-for-5 on stolen base attempts this season.
- Billy Fluharty has 14 hits, two RBIs and 14 runs scored. Fluharty is 3-for-5 on stolen base attempts this season.
- Third baseman Zach Selfon has 13 hits and eight RBIs. Andrew Swenson has six RBIs and has been perfect defensively at second base through the first 17 games.
- The Bison have hit 12 home runs. Ty Lagoni, Andrew Swenson, Ryan Facinelli, Garrison Bullock, Lleyton Coupe and Mathias have all homered. Trommer, Chiaravallo and Mathias all homered in their first at-bats of the season. Bullock homered in his second at-bat of the year.
- Coupe is hitting .333 in 10 games with seven starts. The first baseman got off to a slow start but is hitting .500 (7-for-14) in his last five games. He launched a pinch-hit home run against Saint Joseph's and has taken off with seven hits and five RBIs since then. Coupe was 2-for-3 in games two and three against Lafayette.
- Jonathan Adelmann has a 3.00 ERA in five starts for the Bison in his new role for the Bison. He's pitched 27.0 innings, going five innings or more in three starts. He's gone seven innings in each of the last two games, giving quality starts against both Saint Joseph's and Lafayette. He's struck out 25 batters compared to three walks the last two starts.
- Everett Garber has a 5.40 ERA in 21.2 innings over five starts. Garber is 2-1, getting the win in two of his last three starts. He has 19 strikeouts compared to 12 walks this season. Â Â
- Freshman Brady Hoar has a 5.16 ERA in five starts. Hoar has three starts of at least five innings where he allowed one run or less. He's had two quality starts this season and has racked up 20 strikeouts compared to 15 walks.
- Hadley Maxwell has a 1.69 ERA and is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season for the Bison. He's allowed just one earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings. The only run he allowed came against No. 15 North Carolina.
- Senior Ryan Facinelli was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team and was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2025.
- Bucknell posted an 18-27 overall record with a 10-15 mark in the Patriot League. The Bison finished fifth in the PL missed the playoffs after making the postseason the previous three seasons.
- Holy Cross won the 2025 Patriot League Championship, ending Army's three-year run as champions.
- Head coach Scott Heather is in his 14th season at the helm, and he is the third-longest tenured coach in program history. Heather's 242 career wins are second-most in team history, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Gene Depew (591).
- Coach Heather is assisted by Jason Neitz (16th season), Brett Smith '17 (6th season) and Josh Kieffer (5th season).
- Navy leads the league with a .256 batting average. Bucknell ranks third with a .243 batting average, just behind Holy Cross and Lehigh at .243.
- Navy leads the league with a 3.63 team ERA. Bucknell's 6.97 ERA ranks third.
- Navy ranks second with a .979 fielding percentage. Bucknell ranks last with a .948 fielding percentage.
- Michael Trommer's .348 batting average leads the league. Navy's Victor Izquierdo has a .333 batting average that is tied for second with Garrett Mathias.
- Trommer ranks second with a .636 slugging percentage, and Michael Chiaravallo ranks third with a .586 slugging percentage. Izquierdo ranks eighth at .542.
- Izquierdo ranks second with a .456 on-base percentage. Mathias (.440) ranks fourth, Trommer (.427) ranks sixth and John Calabrese (.405) ranks ninth.
- Trommer ranks second with a 1.063 OPS and Izquierdo is right behind with a .998 OPS.

- Navy's Brady Bendik leads the league with a 1.84 ERA. Owen Phypers ranks second with a 2.08 ERA and Matt Archibald ranks fourth with a 2.79 ERA. Jonathan Adelmann's 3.00 ERA ranks sixth.
- Adelmann leads the league with opponents batting just .198 off of him. Archibald leads the league with 44 strikeouts, followed by Bendik with 33. Adelman ranks third with 26 strikeouts.
- Hadley Maxwell leads the league with three saves. Spencer Stephens ranks second with two saves.
- Owen Phypers leads the league with only five earned runs allowed, followed by Bendik with just six earned runs allowed.
- Navy is 14-6 and 1-2 in the Patriot League to begin the season. The Mids posted a 26-25 record in 2025 and were 14-11 in the Patriot League. Navy fell to Army in 10 innings of game three in the Patriot League semifinals last season.
- Navy is 13-4 in nonconference play this season. They have series wins over Queens, St. Bonaventure and Dartmouth.
- The Midshipmen are hitting .256 as a team and have a 3.63 team ERA after 20 games. Opponents are hitting .237 and opposing pitchers have a 5.07 ERA.
- Victor Izquierdo leads the team in batting average (.333), hits (24), RBIs (17), slugging percentage (.542), on-base percentage (.456), runs scored (17), stolen bases (7) and walks (13). He's only struck out seven times in 72 at bats.
- Tyler Cripe is hitting .286 and is second on the team with 16 RBIs. Cripe and Izquierdo both have two home runs this season.
- John Louden is batting .273 and Mason Ceccarelli is batting .262. Patrick Walsh is batting .258 and has eight extra-base hits. Ceccarelli leads the team with four home runs.
- Â Brady Bendik has a 1.84 ERA in five starts with a 2-2 record. He's pitched 29.1 innings, going five innings or more in all of his starts. He went six innings and seven innings in his last two starts. He's struck out 33 batters compared to 10 walks. He allowed three earned runs in his start against Lehigh, but had only allowed one earned run or less in his first four starts.
- Owen Phypers has a 2.08 ERA in four starts with a 3-1 record. He allowed one earned run over five innings in his first two starts. He allowed three runs in his start against Lehigh but struck out nine batters over 4.2 innings.
- Matt Archibald has a 2.79 ERA in five starts with a 2-3 record. He is fresh off of the PL Pitcher of the Week honor after throwing eight shutout innings in their lone win over Lehigh. He's tossed five innings or more with two earned runs or less in four of his five starts. Archibald has had three straight quality starts coming into the series.
- Timmy Vertudes has yet to allow an earned run in 6.1 innings in relief. Spencer Stephens has a 1.29 ERA in 14.0 innings with one start.
- Jackson Beattie has a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings in relief and Tyler Grenn has 3.00 ERA 18.0 innings. Grenn has made eight appearances with two starts. Â
- Navy leads the series 100-87-1 over the Bison dating back to 1904. Navy won the very first matchup 8-2.
- The Mids went 4-1 against the Bison last season, winning three of four in Annapolis before winning a single game at Depew Field.
- Â Bucknell has two midweek games on the road at Mount St. Mary's and Penn State on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- The Bison then return to Depew Field to host Lehigh for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
