Water Polo Splits on Day One of the Aztec Invite

SAN DIEGO, CALIF.- Bucknell (11-7) split two games on the opening day of the Aztec Invitational. The Bison routed Whittier (3-13) 19-6 and tussled with No. 19 San Diego State (12-7) before falling 15-11.Â

Bucknell rolled to a 19-6 victory over the eighth-ranked team in the Division III poll. Addison Wedding led the Bison with three goals. 13 different players scored a goal for the Orange & Blue, as Coach John McBride cleared his bench.Â
The Bison established dominance from the start with eight goals in the first quarter. Whittier scored three in an attempt to keep pace with the fast-starting Bison.Â
The second period slowed down with Bucknell only scoring two cage-finders but Bucknell held Whittier scoreless.Â
The Orange & Blue did not slow down out of halftime, adding four more goals to the Poets' single line of verse.Â
Bucknell tallied five insurance goals in the final quarter and Whittier scored two more to end the game at 19-6.Â

The Bison kept pace for most of the game with the ranked Aztecs before SDSU used the final quarter to separate for the 15-11 win. Olivia Garcia and Bella Schraa each tallied three goals for Bucknell.Â
The first quarter was a sluggish affair. SDSU scored two goals to Bucknell's one tally.Â
Things heated up in the second period. Bucknell found the cage four times but SDSU kept ahead with six goals.Â
Bucknell made a huge push in the third quarter, outscoring the Aztecs 5-4, and moving within striking distance as the fourth quarter dawned.Â
The upset attempt was denied. SDSU clamped down on any offensive resurgence. Bucknell scored once and San Diego State added three insurance goals for the 15-11 win.Â
