SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite resting two regular starters, the Bucknell men's tennis team swept Mercyhurst 7-0 on Saturday to improve to 3-2 on the young season. The Bison took all three doubles matches and then dropped only one set in singles.
With Brendan McDonald and Adam Stavrakas sitting this one out, Bucknell coach Jason Cohen reconfigured his doubles pairings. Amar Tahirovic, who normally plays with McDonald in the No. 1 spot, was joined by Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega, and the two seniors cruised to a 6-0 win over Colm Schultz and Petar Belosevic.
Freshman Tyler Bush, seeing his first dual-match action of the season, teamed with Will Robinson for a 6-4 win over Danylo Rekun and Lukas Cabue at No. 2 doubles, and Liam Kilmer and Nelson Alapi beat David Mengher and Mykhailo Polishchuck 6-4 at No. 3.
Tahirovic improved to 15-5 in singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rekun in the top spot in the lineup. Kilmer moved up two positions to No. 2 and downed Cabue 6-4, 6-2. Bush jumped into the No. 3 spot and beat Belosevic 6-2, 6-4, and Robinson, Bain, and Alapi followed with wins in the bottom half of the lineup once the outcome had been determined. Robinson won his fourth straight match despite being pushed to a third set, where he bested Schultz 10-5 in a super tiebreaker.
The Bison will be right back in action on Sunday at the Central PA Tennis Center, hosting Temple at noon. The Bucknell and Temple women will also play at the same time on split courts.
