Cummiskey Debuts With Six Goals in 20-6 Win Over Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Freshman Caleigh Cummiskey tied the third-place record for goals in a single game as she led the Bison in scoring with six on the evening as Bucknell (1-0) opened its season with a 20-6 victory over Youngstown State on Friday night.
The six-goal performance by Cummiskey sets the record for the most goals scored by a freshman in her collegiate debut. In addition to Cummiskey, three other freshmen recorded their first collegiate goal in the contest; Alexa Thornton, Madeline Kiely and Lucy Connors. Katie Powers earned her first collegiate point on an assist.
Megan Krestinski led the team in points with eight on three goals and five assists, Cummiskey finished with seven total points as she added one assist to her six goals and Katie Browne rounded out the top-three with three points on three goals. Alex Macutek and Carolien Sheridan each found the back of the net twice and rounding out scoring was Ava Harris who had one goal.Â
Bucknell's defense stood strong limiting the Penguins to just six goals and 20 total shots in the full 45 minutes. Jess Leon led the defense in caused turnovers with four as Bucknell caused 12 turnovers and Youngstown State only caused six. Â
Bella Crowley had a solid night in the net for the Bison as she notched eight saves and six goals against in her first collegiate start.
While draw controls were even at 14, the Bison won the ground ball battle 21-13 over the Penguins, creating more offensive opportunities.Â
Youngstown State turned over the ball 22 times in the game, while Bucknell saw 17 turnovers.
The Bison went 2-for-4 on free-position shots and while the Penguins had more opportunities, they were unable to capitalize on them going 1-for-6.
Youngstown State won the opening draw control, but after a big stop by the Bucknell defense, Megan Krestinski opened the 2026 Bison scoring as she found the back of the net off of a one-touch tap in goal. Less than a minute later, Youngstown State tied the game 1-1 before it went scoreless for over nine-minutes of play. Alex Macutek broke the scoring drought with a goal for Bucknell and Cummiskey followed that up shortly after with her first collegiate goal on a nice cut and shoot play to put the Bison up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bison opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals from Caroline Sheridan and Cummiskey to make it a 5-1 game before the Penguins found the net on a free-position goal to close the gap to three with ten minutes left in the first half. Just under five minutes later, Cummiskey attacked the net for her third goal of the game to make it 6-2 and less than two minutes after that, Katie Browne put one in to give Bucknell a 7-2 lead at halftime.Â
After Estella Geller drew a card, Youngstown State capitalized to open the second half with a wrap-around goal, closing the deficit to four. Krestinski responded with her own wrap-around goal as the shot-clock sat at one-second for Bucknell to go up 8-3 early in the third quarter of play. Just over three-minutes later, Cummiskey ripped a powerful sidearm shot to get her fourth goal of the game and put the Bison on a 2-0 scoring streak in the second half. Youngstown State broke the streak with a goal of their own to close the gap to five, but the Bison then went on a 3-0 run, featuring freshman Lucy Connors' first collegiate goal to end the quarter up 12-4.Â
The fourth quarter opened with back-and-forth play as both teams saw two goals apiece in the first five minutes. Bucknell then went on a 6-0 scoring run to end the game with a 20-6 victory on the road.
Bucknell will next take the field for its season home-opener against UMBC at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Friday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m.
