MEDIA, Pa. – Amar Tahirovic and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega won singles matches and Brendan McDonald took over sole possession of the Bucknell career record for doubles wins, but the Bison men's tennis team fell 4-2 to 73rd-ranked Saint Joseph's on Saturday night at Springton Tennis Club.
Tahirovic and McDonald beat Damir Abdusamadov and Santiago Valle 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. McDonald equaled Ryan Sandburg's career doubles victory record with his 87th last week against Johns Hopkins, and now McDonald has the record to himself with win No. 88. Tahirovic now has 83 doubles wins, which are tied for third-most in team history with Josh Katten.
In singles play, Tahirovic improved to 18-5 this season and 101-23 in his career with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Valle in the top flight. Bain was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Jakob Gaudreau at No. 5, but the Hawks clinched it with straight-set wins at No. 2 and 6 along with Abdusamadov's win over McDonald in a third-set tiebreaker on Court 3.
Saint Joseph's, which is appearing in the ITA team rankings for the first time, avenged a 4-3 loss to Bucknell last season and defeated the Bison for only the third time in 26 all-time meetings.
Bucknell will remain in Philadelphia to face Drexel on Sunday morning. The start time has been moved up an hour to 10 a.m. due to the forecast of snow coming through the area later in the day.
