Bucknell Women Fall to Boston University 68-54 in Sojka

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Despite taking a lead at the end of the first half, Bucknell women's basketball (9-26, 5-9 PL) ultimately fell to Boston University (8-17, 4-10) 68-54 on Valentines Day in Sojka Pavilion.
The first quarter went heavy in Boston's direction as it opened 9-0 and out-scored Bucknell 21-16 overall. The second quarter was all Bison as they out-scored the Terriers 16-7 to take their first lead of the game going into halftime thanks to three three-pointers from Reese Zemitis. The third quarter stayed close, but Boston utilized an early 12-0 run to edge out Bucknell in scoring and maintain a three-point lead. The Terriers secured the win in the fourth quarter by out-scoring the Bison 20-9 to close out the game.
Reese Zemitis led Bucknell in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and four-of-nine shooting from three. Two other bison notched double-digit scoring as Mariah Hardy ended with 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and four-of-six shooting from the free-throw line and Tuana Coskun found 10 points and shot 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Desirae Ashton and Hardy led Bucknell in rebounds with six apiece and Zemitis followed closely with five. Five of Hardy's six rebounds were offensive for the Bison. Coskun led the team in assists with five of Bucknell's seven.
The Terriers out-shot Bucknell in each category on the afternoon. Boston shot 53.3 percent from the field compared to Bucknell's 32.7 percent. From three, Boston went 8-of-20 while Bucknell went 6-of-28. The Terriers shot impressively from the free-throw line going 12-for-14 while the Bison went 14-of-19.
The Terriers out-paced the Bison in rebounds 31-27, but Bucknell recorded more offensive boards as they got 13 to Boston's seven. Both teams were even in turnovers with 10 and steals with five.
Boston University opened the game on a 9-0 scoring run as Bucknell recorded three missed shots which forced Coach Woodruff to call an early timeout. Out of the break, Reese Zemitis drove in for a layup to put the Bison on the board, but the Terriers answered with a three. On Bucknell's next offensive possession, Tuana Coskun was fouled and made both free throws. After a couple of missed opportunities, Semenova found a quick layup in transition. Bucknell then went on a 6-0 run to make it a four point game as Mariah Hardy got fouled and went 1-for-2 at the line, then Bucknell came up with a defensive stop and Coskun made the most of it with a driving layup and then Ella Kreuzer caused a turnover which led to a Zemitis three and a Boston University timeout with 3:10 left in the first quarter. Out of the break, Boston got back-to-back buckets to extend its lead back to eight. Then came a free-throw series with Kreuzer going 2-for-2, followed by McLaughlin going 1-for-2 for Boston and then Coskun going 2-for-2 from the line. The Terriers found another layup with 23 seconds left, but Bucknell ended the first with an Isabella Casey buzzer-beating layup. Despite shooting 9-of-11 from the field compared to Bucknell's 4-of-15, it remained a five point game going into the second quarter.
The first two minutes of the second went scoreless before the Terriers went on a 5-0 run with a three pointer followed by a McLaughlin layup. Hardy was then fouled and went 2-for-2 at the line. Over a minute of scoreless play later, Hardy hit a step-back jumper to cut the deficit back to six at the media timeout. Out of the break, Zemitis extended Bucknell's streak to 7-0 with a three. Boston then broke up Bucknell's scoring with a layup, but Hardy went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line, Casey came up with a rebound off of a missed Boston shot and Hardy came up with a huge offensive board and layup to make it a two-point game with 1:57 left in the half, forcing the Terriers to call a timeout. Out of the break, Bucknell came up with a stop and Zemitis drained a three off of a smooth pass from Coskun to give the Bison a 29-28 lead. After another stop, Zemitis drained her second consecutive three-pointer at the buzzer to extend Bucknell's lead to 32-28 at the half.
Hardy opened the second half scoring with a tough layup, but Boston answered quickly with a 12-0 run that included two Monteagudo three-pointers, to regain the lead 38-34. Coskun broke the scoring streak with a driving layup to make it a four point game, but the Terriers answered with a quick three. Ashton cut it back to five after she picked up an offensive board and put it in for a layup. After the media timeout with 4:22 left in the third quarter, a minute went scoreless before Kreuzer was fouled in back-to-back Bucknell offensive opportunities and went 3-for-4 overall to cut the deficit to two. The Terriers then extended their lead to 47-41 before Anna Kunzwiler drained a three and Ashton followed that up by going 1-for-2 from the line after the Terriers entered the bonus. Boston then made a free-throw to extend its lead three at the end of the third quarter.
Coskun opened the fourth quarter with a second chance layup, but the Terriers answered with a three. Casey didn't let that go on for long as she responded with a three of her own to make it a one point game, but Boston hit yet another three to make it a four point difference. About two and a half minutes later, Kunzwiler made a tough layup to cut the deficit with two ahead of the media timeout with 4:59 remaining. Out of the break, Boston went on a 6-0 run to take a 60-52 lead with 3:37 remaining forcing a Bucknell timeout. Out of the break, the Terriers made back-to-back shots as Bucknell began to struggle with turnovers. Kunzwiler made a layup to make it a ten-point game, but Boston then found another four consecutive points to end the game with a 68-54 win.
Bucknell will hit the road for two games next week. First up for the Bison is American on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m in D.C.
