LEWISBURG, Pa. – The 24th-ranked Bucknell men's soccer team fell to Boston University 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field. All five goals were scored in the first 45 minutes in a hectic first half, but Sebastian Otero's 44th-minute goal would go down as the winner as the Terriers held on to win over the final 45 minutes
Bucknell (5-2-2, 1-1-1 PL) held a 2-1 advantage after just 14 minutes of play in a crazy start to the match. Zane Domsohn scored his fourth goal of the season just three minutes in to put the Bison in front. Cohen Weaver played Jack Lucas in down the wing, and Lucas played a beautiful pass into the box to find Domsohn. The senior took it brilliantly with his left foot and buried it into the bottom left corner.Â
The Bison controlled the first 10 minutes of the match with several opportunities to score, but Boston University (5-3, 2-1 PL) stunned the Bison with a brilliant goal by Pharis Petrica against the run of play. Petrica won possession back at midfield and tried his luck from the halfway point. His shot carried over Freddie Lapworth to level the score 1-1 after 12 minutes.
Just two minutes later, it was Lucas grabbing back the lead with his third goal directly from a free kick this season. His shot deflected off the wall and rolled into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1. Lucas' goal was his Patriot League-leading fifth goal of the season.
Ethan Gill equalized for the Terriers in the 29th minute. The Terriers caught the Bison out in transition, and Petrica was involved again with a beautiful pass to carve out the back line. Gill got to the ball quickly and fired into the bottom left corner.
The Bison looked to take the lead right back with several shots just minutes after the Boston U. goal. Roskos had a good look on goal, but his shot was saved and pushed out by goalkeeper Sheraz Saadat. Zain Elder then followed with another shot that was saved by the netminder.
Otero's goal came in the 44th minute to give Boston U. a 3-2 advantage. Otero received the ball in the box and took a beautiful touch around the defender to find space for the shot. Otero fired the shot into the bottom left corner, reminiscent of Gill's goal just 15 minutes prior.
The Bison pressed for a late opportunity as the half wound down. Jacob Thomas took space from 30 yards out and rifled a left-footed shot that rattled the crossbar.
Bucknell could not find a clear opportunity in the second half as Boston U. sat back defensively. The Terriers countered multiple times, but Lapworth came up big three times to make saves and keep the match within a goal.
Bucknell thought they won a penalty early in the half, but the fourth official intervened to take away the penalty. Domsohn won possession in the attacking third and darted towards net. His shot went wide before a collision with the keeper caused the penalty to be called.
The Bison outshot the Terriers 18-8 in the match with 11 shots on goal. Saadat finished the match with nine saves, making five in the first half and four in the second. Lapworth finished the match with just the three second-half saves.
It was a physical match with 26 fouls and three yellow cards.
Bucknell is back on the road for another non-conference match at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday. The Bison and the Mountaineers kick off at 7 p.m.
