EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Bucknell men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday night at the Waldron Family Stadium. Bucknell out-shot the Mountaineers 18-2, but could not find the winner as goalkeeper Julian Marcos made several tough saves to keep the match level.
Both goals were scored within a minute of each other in the first half. It was Drew Roskos who opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute. The forward caused chaos deflecting the ball back into the box and the ball fell to him right in front of the net to put home the opening goal.
Just 45 second later, a mistake at Bucknell's defensive end sent an attacker through on goal, and keeper Freddie Lapworth was late to the challenge to give the Mountaineers a penalty. Graham Dougald buried the opportunity to level the match 1-1.
Bucknell out-shot the Mountaineers 5-1 after the first 45 minutes, then put the pressure on with six shots on target and four shots that were blocked in front of goal. The Mount defense stood strong, including six saves by Marcos in the half.
The Bison opened the half with five shots including two on target in the first 10 minutes. Ben Sheffield nearly got on the end of a set piece with a great header in the 56th minute, but Marcos got there quick to make a stop. Jakuba Samelko had another good look on the ensuing corner, but the angle was too tight to squeeze it past the keeper.
Samelko had another great look in the 82nd minute after the ball deflected over the Mountaineers back line. The forward pounced on the opportunity and took a half-volley on a bouncing ball. Marcos came up again, extending his leg to get a foot on the ball.
Jack Lucas had Bucknell's last big opportunity in the 88th minute to force another big save. Lucas got the ball on the wing and carried toward the midfield. He found some space and fired a dangerous shot that was saved and out for a corner.
Lapworth made one save in the match in the 80th minute. Isaiah Garcia carried down the wing and took a hard shot, but Lapworth got low to make a good stop in goal.
Bucknell had 12 corners in the match. Samelko finished the game with three shots on target. The Mount had just one shot on the penalty goal through the first 80 minutes as the Bison defense was solid aside from the mistake leading to the goal.
