LEWISBURG, Pa. – Jimmy Pombor's finish in a chaotic scene won the match in the dying seconds as the Bucknell men's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 result over Army West Point on Saturday night at Emmitt Field.
Bucknell (6-2-3, 2-1-1 PL) won a corner late in the match with one final opportunity to find the back of the net after 89 scoreless minutes. Kasper Piela's original ball into the box was cleared only to David Krumov, who quickly sent the ball back out wide.
Piela served in another ball, and Collin Sullivan leapt into action to get a touch. The ball fell right to Pombor who slotted in his first goal of the season.
Bucknell dominated the majority of the second half as Army (3-4-4, 1-2-1 PL) had just a couple opportunities on the attack. The Black Knights' biggest moment came in 69th minute through Ronald Zhai. Zhai found space at the edge of the box, but his left footed shot that was destined for the corner was pushed aside by a diving Freddie Lapworth.
Lapworth made two saves in the second half for his only two saves of the night. Lapworth was tested from distance later on, but the senior made a comfortable save in the end.
Army had no shots on target in the first half, but had two of its best opportunities to score. Jubril Bamgbala looked to have given the Black Knights the advantage just 11 minutes in, but his header that found the back of the net was ruled offsides.
The Black Knights had another opportunity in the 30th minute as Jack Kryger had just Lapworth to beat. A miscue defensively set Kryger up perfectly in front of goal, but his shot went just over the bar as the Bison caught a break.
Bucknell peppered the Army goal with 18 shots in the match, nine of which were on target. Drew Roskos caused chaos to the Army back line all night, and was unlucky not to score as the forward had seven shots and four shots on target.
A Jack Lucas free kick was saved in the 54th minute, and the rebound squeezed out to Roskos. The sophomore could not get enough of his foot on the ball to trouble the keeper. Roskos had another big opportunity just minutes later, firing in a one-touch shot on a ball played in from the wing. Army goalkeeper Michael Guiry came up with a big diving stop to keep the match scoreless at that point.
Guiry finished the match with eight saves, making several goal-saving stops in net. The Bison outshot the Black Knights 18-10 in the match.
Bucknell is back in action at Emmitt Field on Tuesday night as Binghamton comes to town for North Union United night.
