WORCESTER, Mass.- Bucknell softball (16-28, 7-10 Patriot League) shut out Holy Cross (8-36, 1-16 Patriot League) twice 1-0 and 4-0 to position itself for the fourth and final seed in next weekend's Patriot League Tournament. Savannah Jones and Madison Roukey each blanked the Crusaders and the Bison offense scratched together enough runs to move the Orange & Blue's conference win streak to seven games.
Game One Recap
Jones continued her hot streak in the circle and now has only yielded one run in her last five appearances (29 innings pitched). The senior hurler has tossed three shutouts in her last five starts. She also provided two of Bucknell's three hits and sole run.
Holy Cross's best opportunity arrived in the second inning. Jordan Goedel led off with a double. Jones obtained two outs before yielding two walks and loading the bases. Jones rallied by inducing Ava Gambichler to ground out.
Bucknell struck for its sole run in the fourth inning by not wasting its leadoff double situation. Haley Speicher provided the two-bagger. Ava Aguilar sacrificed her to third base. Jones assisted her cause with a sharp RBI single.
Jones largely cruised throughout the later innings. Twice the Crusaders singled and were thrown out trying to steal. Holy Cross went down in order to end the game.
Game Two Recap
Roukey continued her success against the Crusaders by obtaining another shutout. The senior pitcher allowed five scattered hits and two walks while economically throwing 97 pitches.
Bucknell scored first in the third inning taking advantage of an two-out error when the HC pitcher could not handle Jones's grounder. A hit by pitch on Brooke Popella set the table for Shea Malone. Malone delivered an RBI single, scoring Jones.
The Bison added another run in its next at-bat once again seizing the opportunity presented by a Holy Cross error. Angelina Seropian reached on a throwing error and Reagan Powell pinch run for the catcher. Bella Radican sacrificed her to second base. Aguilar slashed an RBI single to left field, scoring Powell.
Holy Cross threatened to tie the game in its fourth frame, starting the inning with a double and single. Roukey obtained a strikeout. Nifty defense gained the second out at home on a fielder's choice and a pop-up followed for the third out.
Bucknell added two insurance runs in the fifth inning. Popella led off with a solo home run over the left field wall. MaKenzie Hilling doubled with one out and Nicole Lioumis pinch ran for the senior captain. Lioumis scored when the Holy Cross second baseman committed her second error on a Seropian grounder.
The Crusaders's first two batters again reached in their next licks but Roukey gathered three straight outs.
Roukey breezed through the last two innings, grabbing six straight outs.
