WORCESTER, Mass.- Bucknell softball (17-28, 8-10 Patriot League) finished the regular season with a sweep of the Holy Cross Crusaders (8-37, 1-17 Patriot League) and clinched the fourth and final spot in the Patriot League Tournament. The Bison rallied to beat Holy Cross 6-4 to complete its conference schedule on an eight-game winning streak.
The win proved superfluous to Bucknell's tournament hopes as the Orange & Blue clinched the spot before the game started after Army defeated Colgate. Colgate needed to win its final two games and a Bucknell loss to Holy Cross. The Bison will face Army in the Patriot League Tournament Opening Round at West Point. Army's victories over Colgate sealed the No. 1 seed and tournament hosting duties for the Black Knights.
Sarah Zimmerman received the start and pitched well before allowing several runs. Madison Roukey entered the game in relief and held the Crusaders in check while the offense regained the lead.
Bucknell jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The first run arrived right away. Haley Speicher started the game with a single. Ava Aguilar doubled and Savannah Jones delivered a sacrifice fly. The Bison loaded the bases in the second inning with two singles and a fielder's choice off a Speicher bunt attempt. Jones proved clutch again with a two-run single.
Holy Cross grabbed two runs back in its second chance. A walk and a single set the stage for a two-run double.
The Crusaders tied the game in the next inning with a Kate Trudgen solo home run. Ali Sniegocki followed with a double and Madison Roukey entered the circle to douse the fire.
Holy Cross seized the lead in the fourth inning. A single, a wild pitch, and a grounder placed a Crusader on third base. Anna Brait smashed an RBI single for the 4-3 lead.
Bucknell regained the lead in its next at-bats. Brooke Popella led off with a home run down the left field line. Two straight outs followed. Juliette Basso pinch hit for Marissa Rapino and delivered a double. Shea Malone pinch ran for the senior. Angelina Seropian drew a walk. Skye Perez pinch hit for Bella Radican and hit an RBI single for the 5-4 advantage.
The Bison added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Molly Lawson worked a leadoff walk and Reagan Powell pinch ran for the sophomore. Powell stole second and advanced to third on a grounder. Seropian's single tallied Powell and gave Roukey a two-run cushion.
Roukey did not hesitate in the final inning, setting down Holy Cross 1-2-3 for the win.
The Bison, as the fourth seed, will face No. 1 Army on Thursday. Game time is to be determined.
