WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- Bucknell women's track & field sits in first place at the Colonial Relays after the opening day of competition. The Bison won three events and unlocked a new top-five mark in program history.
Results
Bucknell's speedy freshman, Alexandra Lea, already etched her name in the Bucknell record books, and she added her signature to another list with a 54.74 performance in the 400-meter dash. The time won the event and slotted second in Bucknell history, only 0.07 seconds away from Jess Bridle's mark set in 2016.
"Alex ran a great opener today," said sprints coach Richard Alexander. "To run the second-fastest time of all-time just shows the work she has put in. Her competitiveness battling down the straightaway is one of my favorite things about her."
Evelyn Bliss, Bucknell's star javelineer, repeated as the event winner for the second straight year at the Colonial Relays. Bliss threw 49.81m (163-5), easily taking home gold. Â
"The goal for this meet was improvement on the runway and, for the most part, that was achieved," said throws coach Ryan Protzman. "Still forcing a bit and breaking rhythm, but looking closer with each meet rep."
"I'm so thankful I got to travel down with all four of us girls (javelineers)," said Bliss. "Also getting to throw in some warm weather again was nice! By finals, I felt very confident in my runways and approaches, but sometimes you have competitions where you can't execute a big throw. Nonetheless, I'm happy with the experience and how I finished."
Lauren Trapani capped the night, winning the 10,000-meter run – the day's final event. The senior distance runner logged 36:50.75.
Kerry O'Day continued her 3000-meter steeplechase success with a second-place finish, racing 10:58.56.
Regan McGrath notched third place in the 800-meter run, racing 2:13.30.
Madison Fowler grabbed fourth place in the hammer throw, tossing 48.01m (157-6).
Elizabeth Bryant and Karly Renn tied for fifth in the pole vault with clearances of 12-1.50. The mark tied Bryant's career-best mark.
Madison Libby finished ninth (17-5) in the long jump.
The Colonial Relays conclude tomorrow, as the Bison look to defend their title.
