WEST POINT, N.Y. – No. 4 Army West Point scored 14 of its 20 goals in the middle two periods and went on to defeat Bucknell 20-11 on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium. The Bison put 11 goals on the board against the nation's top-ranked defense – one shy of the most allowed by the Black Knights this season – but Army was red-hot at the other end, scoring 20 goals on 44 shots.
Michael Meyer scored three times and Connor Davis and Peter Grandolfo twice each for the Bison, who fell to 5-8 overall and 2-5 in the Patriot League. Anthony Panetti logged a goal and two assists, and Sean Berrigan added two assists of his own.
Army came into the day allowing only 6.55 goals per game. The Bison had seven by halftime, but the first-place Black Knights broke open a tight game in the third quarter and improved to 11-1 on the season, 6-1 in the Patriot League.
Jackson Eicher, who came in ranked second nationally in goals per game, added seven more to his sheet along with three assists. Gunnar Fellows also had a big day with five goals and two assists. Army won 23 of the 34 faceoffs and found success scoring in transition, including three goals from long poles.
It was a game of runs in the first half. Even though Bucknell possessed the ball for the game's first four minutes thanks to a Colin McLoy faceoff win and a couple of hard rides, Army scored on four of its first five shots to take a 4-0 lead.
Bucknell battled back and drew even at 4-4 by the end of the first period. Owen Kovacs wrapped a shot around his defender to get the Bison on the board at the 5:49 mark. Jack Dudas delivered a huge hit to save a possession, which ended in Davis' rocket from the left side. Berrigan fed Will Hopkins on the crease for an extra-man goal to make it 4-3, and then after an Army shot hit the post, Grant Malas nabbed the ground ball and Grandolfo beat the buzzer after a long run in transition.
The Black Knights tallied the first three goals of the second period, but again the Bison responded with two goals in just 15 seconds. Panetti snuck a shot past Sean Byrne from a sharp angle, and then off the faceoff win, wing Ollie Hau found Meyer for a quick strike to make it 7-6.
Once again Army found another flurry, scoring four times in just 4:53 before Meyer struck again to make it 11-7. After the halftime break, the Black Knights scored three times in the first four minutes and went on to outscore the Bison 7-2 in the period to grab a commanding 18-9 lead.
Davis' third-quarter goal was his 40th of the season, and he joins Justin Zackey (1993-94) as the only Bison with two 40-goal seasons. It's only the eighth 40-goal campaign in team history. Davis, who broke Zackey's career scoring record earlier this season, is the first Bucknell player with three seasons of at least 38 goals.
Army outshot Bucknell 44-41 and led 36-24 in ground balls. The Bison used four goalies in the contest, combining for 14 saves. Parker Day stopped seven shots with only five goals allowed. Three Army goalies combined for 12 stops.
Bucknell wraps up the season next Friday with its Senior Night game against Navy at 7 p.m.
