Easton, Pa. -Â A last minute quick-stick goal from Lafayette would determine a heartbreaking 11-10 loss for the Bison on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Bison are now 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the Patriot League.Â
Allie Boyce had three goals in the game to bring her career goals total to 143 as she found herself just one shy of the program record. Megan Krestinski led the team with five goals on the night and Alex Macutek and Katie Browne also recorded one goal each for the Bison in the contest.Â
The game came down to the wire as Bucknell entered the fourth quarter down by two goals and saw the first two goals of the fourth in Browne and Krestinski to tie the game at nine with nine minutes left. Lafayette answered minutes later to take a 10-9 lead, but Krestinski would rocket off a shot through Molly Terraciano's legs to tie the game once again with two and a half minutes remaining. It wouldn't be enough to give the Bison a win as Lafayette's Sara Rogers would catch and shoot a one-timer with under a minute left and the Leopards would win the next draw to secure the win.Â
The game was a close one from the start as the first quarter of play was a low scoring 15 minutes riddled with high-pressure defense and turnovers. Krestinski opened the game with a goal for Bucknell, but Lafayette responded twenty seconds later with a goal of its own to tie the game. After eight minutes of scoreless play, the Leopards recorded two more goals to end the quarter up by two.Â
Lafayette continued in the second quarter with a goal in its first possession on a free-position attempt to extend its lead to three. The Bison then found their stride as Krestinski scored on a free-position shot followed by a goal from Macutek to make it a one goal game. Krestinksi then ripped a shot a minute later to tie the game at four. Less than a minute after her goal, McClain fed Boyce the ball on a cut straight through the middle and Boyce scored to give the Bison a 5-4 lead. Lafayette answered with two straight goals to go ahead by one. Bucknell won the next draw and Boyce was fouled inside the eight and rewarded a free-position shot which she buried to tie the game at six with a minute left in the half. Just seconds before halftime, Lafayette's Sara Rogers made a reverse goal to give the Leopards a 7-6 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter was another that saw heavy pressuring defenses and issues with maintaining possession on both sides of the ball. Lafayette won that quarters battle notching two goals to Bucknell's one.Â
The Bison outshot the Leopards 32 to 21, but Lafayette saw more shooting accuracy with 16 of their 21 shots on goal to Bucknell's 17 of 32 being on goal.
Both teams struggled with maintaining possession throughout the game. Despite getting the win, Lafayette had 21 turnovers to Bucknell's 10. Lafayette did force more turnovers causing 10 to Bucknell's seven caused turnovers.Â
The Bison struggled once again on the draw circle only winning 5-of-24 draw controls, but they recorded more ground balls than the Leopards having 24 to their 13.Â
Colleen Kazanjian recorded five saves on the evening and the Bison went 21-for-22 on the clears.
Due to the large gap in draw controls in favor of Lafayette and the large gap in turnovers in favor of Bucknell, it proved to be a close game that came down to a final minute goal.
Bucknell will return to action on Saturday, April 19 as they head to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army at 3 p.m.
