UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Bucknell softball (9-20) fell 8-0 in five innings to Penn State (15-18) in the latest edition of the Route 45 Rivalry on Tuesday evening. The Nittany Lions scored in four of five innings to vanquish the Orange & Blue. The defeat was Bucknell's seventh straight loss.
The Bison's best scoring opportunity arrived in the opening inning. Haley Speicher and Savannah Jones singled and MaKenzie Hilling walked to load the bases with one out. Brooke Popella went swinging on the first pitch and grounded into a double play.
Penn State entered the contest with 50 home runs (15th nationally) and added to that tally when Brunson slammed a Madison Roukey offering bomb off the Beard Field scoreboard.
The Blue & White added another run in the second inning. A single, a double, and a walk, intermixed with a strikeout and a grounder, loaded the bases. Ricks worked Roukey for a walk to score a run. Roukey minimized the damage with a grounder.
Savannah Jones replaced Roukey in the circle for the third inning but the Lions continued their pattern of scoring a run. A hit by pitch placed the leadoff runner on base. A bunt single's damage was doubled when Jones's throw flew into right field scoring the runner.
Sarah Zimmerman received the pitching assignment for the fifth inning and immediately ran into trouble. Brunson hit a leadoff triple and scored a sacrifice fly foul out. Penn State smelled blood and the team pounded three doubles and a single for three RBI. Payton Hale replaced Zimmerman in an attempt to douse the flames but the inning's fourth double scored PSU's eighth run and invoked the mercy rule.
The Bison return to conference play this weekend at Lehigh (April 5-6).
