CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Savannah Jones threw a complete game shutout and the Bison offense came alive with three runs in the seventh inning to complete the Cathi Maynard Invitational with a 3-0 victory over UMass Lowell (3-14). Bucknell (7-11) avenged Friday's 10-0 defeat to the Riverhawks.
Jones was brilliant obtaining four strikeouts while holding the Riverhawks to three hits and three walks. The senior pitcher has emerged as Bucknell's steadiest circle-inhabitant and she delivered a much-needed performance to regain some momentum after Saturday's twin defeats.
"I'm really happy to come out of this weekend with two wins," said head coach Sarah Caffrey. "We didn't play our best softball through the five games and the ability to lock in and get two wins was really big for us. I'd like to see our pitching and defense tighten up through our last three spring break games and today's win really set the tone moving forward.
Today was truly a team win and I'm proud of the adjustments that were made. Ultimately, we're preparing for the Patriot League so within these games I really look forward to us finding some consistency while still giving a lot of opportunities throughout the lineup."
Bucknell had a scoring chance in the second inning when Brooke Popella singled and a pitch hit Molly Lawson. A fielder's choice and a flyout stranded the runners.
UMass Lowell used a single and a walk to create some excitement in its second frame. Jones ended their dreams with two strikeouts.
Reagan Powell continued her impressive transition to catcher by gunning down a Riverhawk trying to swipe third base during the third inning.
Bucknell broke the scoreless pitching duel with three runs in the seventh inning. Popella and Jones led off with two straight singles. Lawson laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Juliette Basso scratched out an infield single scoring Popella. Shea Malone pinch hit for Powell and delivered an RBI via a fielder's choice. Malone then stole second and Ava Aguilar continued her hot streak with an RBI single.
Jones allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh inning but settled down to business obtaining three straight outs to seal Bucknell's seventh victory.
Bucknell concludes the spring break trip with a single game at Lipscomb on Tuesday and a doubleheader versus Tennessee State on Wednesday.
