LEWISBURG, Pa.-- Caroline Sheridan notched a career-high five goals and was one of three Bison that earned hat tricks in Bucknell's 17-6 victory over Kent State at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Bison improve to an even 2-2 on the season.Â
Bucknell came out to a hot start in the first quarter rolling with nine goals. The spark began right off the opening draw as Aliza Thir secured the ball and Megan Krestinski immediately drew a free-position shot and capitalized, scoring on the Bison's first possession. While Kent State won the next two draws, Bucknell didn't slow down as their defense forced the Golden Flashes to turn over the ball both times and the Bison scored on each opportunity. Keeping their foot on the gas, Bucknell notched another three goals to take a 6-0 lead over Kent State about halfway through the first quarter. The Golden Flashes were able to get two goals in the first, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the aggressive offense that Bucknell displayed, having Allie Boyce and Sheridan both earning first quarter hat tricks.Â
The theme remained consistent throughout the next three quarters of play with Bucknell taking charge in both an offensive and defensive manner. The Bison spread the ball around on the offensive side having eight different players score in the game. Alongside Boyce and Sheridan, Kat Reynolds had a hat trick on the afternoon and matched her career-high for goals in a game. The other goal contributors were Alex Nesbitt (2), Krestinski (1) Alex Macutek (1), Katie Browne (1), and Carly Cenci (1).Â
Bucknell had 12 assists in the game split between seven players. Taylor McClain continued to be an efficient facilitator for the Bison as she recorded three assists and Nesbitt also notched three as the two led the Bison in that category.
Bucknell greatly improved on the draw from their previous three games winning 14-of-27. Madie Thistlewaite took charge on the draw circle recording a career-high seven draw controls.Â
Bucknell took good care of the ball throughout the afternoon with an 11-for-12 clearing efficiency. They were also able to control the ball, limiting Kent State's ability to cause turnovers with the Golden Flashes only having five caused turnovers in the game. On the flip side, the Bison were able to notch 13 caused turnovers of their own. Jess Leon led the crew in that department, adding three more to her stat sheet in the game.Â
Colleen Kazanjian has started each game in goal thus far for the Bison and has totaled 22 saves over the season. Bella Crowley and Toni Plunkett each got in the contest with Kent State and Plunkett notched her career-first save.
Bucknell held control in many of the categories against Kent State. The Bison out-shot the Golden Flashes 41-8 and had a 19-9 edge in ground balls with 14 different Bucknell athletes contributing to that stat. Â
This game marked the last of a three-game home series for Bucknell. The Bison will now take to the road for four away games. Up first is Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md., on Saturday, March 1 at 4 p.m.
