Michael Chiaravallo highlighted the win with a game-saving catch in the eighth inning. Leading 10-7, the Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs. On contact, the sophomore made a great jump and read in the left-centerfield gap, diving into action to make an incredible grab to save the runs from scoring. Just an inning prior, junior Garrison Bullock nailed a runner at third base from right field for an important second out that halted a big Davidson rally.
Senior Ben Magovern was back in action after missing last season with an injury. The lefthander gave the Bison four strong innings in his start, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.
Bucknell (3-3) scored two quick runs in second inning before a fourth-inning explosion capped off by Kender's three-run homer gave the Bison a 7-1 lead. The Bison had runners on the corners after Chiaravallo singled and sophomore Luke Nascimento doubled, setting up a two-run double by sophomore Billy Fluharty.
The rally continued with senior Brady Karp reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Kender then stepped up for the sixth home run of his career.
Bucknell and Davidson traded crooked numbers in the middle innings. A four-run fifth inning got the Wildcats back in the ballgame, but the three-run sixth from the Bison was the difference in the game.
Leading 7-5, Kender and Trommer sat at the corners with one out. Junior Ryan Facinelli put the first pitch in play, bringing Kender home on a fielder's choice. Bullock kept the inning going with an RBI single to left. A single by Chiaravallo moved a runner into scoring position for an RBI double by sophomore Andrew Swenson to extend the lead to 10-5.
Junior reliever Hadley Maxwell impressed again in his second appearance for the Bison after notching his first career save last week at Virginia Tech. Maxwell took over with the bases loaded in the seventh, allowing just a two-run single that made it 10-7. Maxwell finished the game with scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth. He allowed just two hits and struck out three batters.
Bucknell scored its 10 runs on 14 hits and five Bison had multiple hits. Bullock, Chiaravallo, Fluharty, and Trommer all had two hits. Facinelli and Fluharty both had two RBIs.
Davidson scored its seven runs on 10 hits. The Wildcats were plunked six times and walked eight times, but stranded 14 runners on base.
After the first two series, Kender leads the Bison with a .333 batting average in 21 at-bats. After just one hit in the series with Virginia Tech, Kender was 6-for-12 with six RBI in the three games at Davidson.
Maxwell and sophomore Jonathan Adelmann have been sharp out of the bullpen. Adelmann has pitched five scoreless innings and Maxwell has allowed no runs in 3.2 innings to start the year.
The Bison have a quick turnaround, traveling to Pitt on Tuesday for a single game at Charles L. Cost Field at 3 p.m. Next weekend, the Bison have its home opener with Saint Joseph's coming to town. The three-game series starts with a doubleheader at Depew Field with Game 1 set for Saturday, March 1 at 12 p.m.
