Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison look to build more momentum in the Steel City on Tuesday afternoon, taking on Pitt in a single game at 3 p.m.
- Bucknell is coming off of two straight wins over Davidson to move to 3-3 on the season. After just two runs on four hits in a Game 1 loss, the Bison took both Games 2 and 3 with an 8-3 win and a 10-7 win, respectively.
- Davidson took an early 2-0 lead in Game 2 before the Bison plated a run in six straight frames. Michael Trommer highlighted the Bison offense with a 2-for-4 day with four RBI. Trommer tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning with an RBI double, then cleared the bases in the eighth inning with a three-run double to break the game open 8-3. Â
- It was a back-and-forth Game 3, but the Bison took an early 7-1 lead after four innings and never gave up the lead. Senior Billy Kender capped off a five-run inning with a three-run shot. It was the sixth of his career and the first Bison homer of the year. A three-run sixth inning gave the Bison a 10-5 lead after the Wildcats cut the lead to two runs.
- Kender was 6-for-12 with six RBI and a walk in the series after managing just one hit in the opening series at Virginia Tech. He leads the Bison through two series with a .333 batting average.
- Trommer finished the series 4-for-14 with four RBI at the plate multi-hit days in the last two games of the series. Junior Billy Fluharty was 3-for-11 with five runs scored. Fluharty came up big in Game 3 with a two-run double in the fifth inning.
- Junior Ryan Facinelli and sophomore Andrew Swenson each had two RBIs in the series. In Game 3, Facinelli brought home what became the winning run on a fielder's choice. Three batters later, Swenson drove in another run with a double to extend the lead to 10-7.
- After some shuffling around in the first four games, sophomore Michael Chiaravallo and junior Garrison Bullock looked comfortable in the corner outfield positions in the last two games of the series.
- In right field, Bullock halted a big Davidson rally in the seventh inning with a perfect throw to get the runner at third for a huge second out. In left field, Chiaravallo saved three-runs from scoring with a diving catch in the left-centerfield gap to end the eighth inning. The three runs would have tied the game 10-10.
- Senior Brady Karp had a quietly productive series. Karp was 2-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored. Karp drew three walks and was plunked twice. The second-baseman successfully laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt in both Games 2 and 3.
- The Bison had several great outings on the mound over the weekend. Most notably, sophomore Jonathan Adelmann was lights out in the Game 2 victory. Adelmann took over in the seventh inning, pitching three scoreless innings to earn the save. Adelmann stranded both baserunners he allowed and struck out three batters. Adelmann has now tossed 5.0 scoreless innings in his two relief appearances to start the year.
- Junior Hadley Maxwell has earned two saves in both of his appearances. Maxwell earned a save in Bucknell's Game 2 win over Virginia Tech and tossed 2.2 innings to close out Game 3 over Davidson. Maxwell took over a bases-loaded situation in the seventh. Maxwell allowed just two inherited runs to come home before getting out of the jam. He tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth to earn the save.
- Sophomore Dante Pavone made his first appearance for the Bison in Game 2. The right-hander tossed a scoreless sixth inning in Game 2. Â Â
- Through six games, the Bison have a .193 team batting average and a 6.23 team ERA entering Tuesday's contest. Opponents are batting .323 and have had a 5.67 ERA against the Bison.
- The Bison will head south once again this season. The Bison take on Florida Atlantic in a two-game series before a four-game set with Florida International over the spring break (Mar. 11-16).
- Head coach Scott Heather is in his 13th season at the helm, passing Bill Lane (1946-57) as the third-longest tenured coach in program history. Heather's 224 career wins are second-most in team history, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Gene Depew (591).
- Pitt is off to a hot 5-1 start to the year. The Panthers swept Eastern Michigan in its opening series then took two-of-three games from Monmouth. Tomorrow's game against the Bison will be its home-opener for the season.
- The Panthers took 5-1 and 6-1 wins in the first two games before falling 7-6 to Monmouth in the final game of the series.
- Pitt is batting .293 as a team through its first six games. Luke Cantwell (.450) and Lorenzo Carrier (.435) are both batting above .400 to start the year. Ryan Zuckerman is batting .357 and AJ Nessler is hitting .308.
- It's been a consistent lineup thus far for the Panthers with only 12 players having a plate appearance thus far.
- It was bombs-away for Pitt in its opening series against Eastern Michigan. The Panthers launched seven home runs in the series, including two each from Carrier and Nessler. In Jackson Cook's only plate appearance, he crushed a pinch-hit home run.
- Gavin Shillot Kyle Demi, and Ethan Firoved have led the Panthers out of the bullpen. Shillot has allowed no runs in five innings of work over two appearances. In three appearances, Demi has struck out seven batters and allowed no runs in 4.1 innings of work Firoved has a 1.23 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 7.1 innings in two appearances in relief. He's fanned nine batters thus far and walked nobody.
- The Panthers staff overall sports a 3.60 team ERA heading into Tuesday's game. Opponents have batted .261 through the first six games. Daniel McAuliff, Sam Bryan and Noah Czajkowski have all pitched at least one scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
- The Panthers had a 26-29 overall record and went 10-20 in a tough ACC conference last season.
- This Bison and Panthers will meet on the diamond for the 52nd time, dating back to 1908. Pitt holds the series 31-20 and has won each of the last five games. The last Bucknell win came back in 1991 when the Bison won 5-2 under storied coach Gene Depew. In 1908, The Bison won the first two meetings between the programs 4-3 and 5-4.
- In the most recent meeting, Pitt delivered the comeback victory after the Bison led 8-4 after six innings. The Panthers used a five-run eighth inning to win 11-8. Billy Kender was 2-for-4 in that game with an RBI and a walk. Tyler Dunn also had a hit in that ballgame.
- This weekend, the Bison play their home-opener at Depew Field on Saturday. Saint Joseph's comes to Lewisburg for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. On Sunday, the Bison then travel to Saint Joseph's to complete the three-game set with the Hawks.
