RESULTS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Victoria Castro wrote her name into the No. 4 spot in two different Bucknell top-10 lists, and the Bison women's swimming and diving team is in fourth place after the first of three days of the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium.
Bucknell's 249 points are only 32.5 behind third-place Fordham. Brown raced to the early lead with 572.5 points, well ahead of second-place Delaware with 416. Behind the Bison are UMBC (197), Davidson (183), and Seton Hall (115).
In the first event of the evening session, Castro swam the lead leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay, which posted the fourth-best time in team history (1:33.02) in a fourth-place finish. That mark is just .32 off the school record. Sara Ketron, Jennifer Bolden, and Kyla Kelly followed Castro. Bucknell's B relay also performed well, with Virginia Hastings, Kennedy Deveaux, Ashley Piacentino, and Natalia Gajecki finishing sixth in 1:34.72. Brown set the pool record in the event with a 1:30.97.
Castro came back later to finish fourth in a fast 50 free. Her time of 23.27 is also fourth-best in team history and not far off the school record, set last year by Ketron at the Patriot League Championships. Ketron (17th) and Bolden (21st) also scored for the Bison.
The first individual event of the night was the 500 free, and star sophomore Clara Renner led Bucknell with a fifth-place finish in 4:53.48. Kelly Byrne also made the A Final and finished seventh in 4:55.91, which is just .33 outside the top 10. Sydney Dettmann won the B Final and placed ninth, and Tessa Feld also scored with a 19th-place finish.
Hastings was the top Bison in the 200 individual medley, finishing seventh in 2:04.46. Kelly actually went faster in the B Final. Her time of 2:03.78 would have been good for sixth place in the A Final, but she settled for 10th-place points. Sydney Jee (18th) and Deveaux (21st) also scored in the 200 IM.
Freshmen Dea Mielenz (18th, 207.10) and Ruby Olliffe (23rd) both scored on the 3-meter diving board.
The three-day meet continues on Saturday with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
