LEWISBURG, Pa. – Boston University scored twice on corner kicks and once on a penalty kick on the way to a 3-0 win over Bucknell in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison suffered their first Patriot League defeat in five matches and fell to 1-1-3 in conference play, while the red-hot Terriers jumped into first place at 3-1-1.
Bucknell trailed 2-0 at the half, despite limiting Boston University to three total shots. The Bison had a couple of great scoring chances in the opening stages of the match, including a clean header from Sydney Hess off a corner kick that appeared ticketed for the back of the net, but goalkeeper Bridget Carr raced across her goal line to make a diving save.
Moments later, Boston University cashed in on a corner kick of its own. Mackenzie Stickelman headed the service forward, and Margy Porta flicked it in with her back to goal.
Bucknell responded with a heavy barrage at the other end, earning four corner kicks in a span of about two minutes. All of them were dangerous, and Gaby Parker was robbed on the doorstep by midfielder Olivia Avellar, who blocked the redirect off the goal line.
The Terriers made it 2-0 in the 38th minute when Samantha Aronson was taken down in the box, and Aronson took the PK herself for her first goal of the season.
Boston University controlled much of the action in the second half and added a third in the 58th minute on Stickelman's header off another corner kick. That was the Terriers' 11th goal in their last three games. They might have had more, but Bison goalkeeper Reese Dolan made several terrific saves, and center back Julia Palitti saved a ball off the line.
Dolan finished with a career-high eight saves on the day, as Boston University finished with a 15-11 shot advantage.
The Bison face another tough test on Wednesday with a road game at Army West Point at 6 p.m.
