Field Hockey Defeats Boston University 2-1 in Double Overtime Thriller

LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (3-4, 1-0 Patriot League) used two Lily Neilson goals to edge the Boston University Terriers (3-4, 0-1 Patriot League) 2-1 in a double-overtime fight on Friday at Graham Field. Bucknell grabbed the crucial conference win thanks to tenacious defense and the shooting ability of its star senior. It was Bucknell's first win in 10 years at home against the league powerhouse Terriers.Â
"I'm so proud of this team and happy they were able to get a win like this against a very strong Boston team," said head coach Kelsey Kojojejchick. "They stuck to the game plan, played smart picking and choosing their moments to go for it or to be patient which was great to see. I loved that they fought together and worked hard for each other for the entire game."
Postgame with Lily Neilson and Coach Kelsey Kolojejchick:
Neilson started the scoring in the first quarter with a masterclass drive and finish. The senior striker dodged and weaved her way through the Terrier defense with the ease of a NASCAR driver until she entered the shooting circle. She met opposition and deftly maneuvered her shot around the goalkeeper. The veteran goalkeeper could not corral the attempt and Bucknell led 1-0.Â
The third and fourth quarters featured dozens of substitutions and relatively few scoring chances. Both defenses kept the offenses off balance with the dying summer heat causing consistent changes in the lineups. With four minutes left, Boston's Martu Coulo was whistled for a yellow card, necessitating her banishment for five minutes. Bucknell tried but could not take advantage of the extra player.Â
Coulo's penalty bled into the first minute of the opening overtime stanza but the Terriers gained possession and prevented any offensive opportunities. Both teams took two shots in the first overtime period but no golden goals were scored.Â
Bucknell opened the second overtime period with a beautiful pass play from Gianna Puorro to Isabella Pavlides. The senior just missed wide with her redirect at the far post. Bison partisans did not need to despair, as less than two minutes later, Neilson carried along the end line and earned a penalty corner. Pavlides inserted the ball to Nicky Punt who passed it to Neilson on the left flank. There was a feeling of confidence as the two-time reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year proved why her stick is the most feared in the circuit. Her missile flew past the bunched-up Terriers and reverberated in the cage. Neilson was mobbed by her teammates in jubilation, as the Bison celebrated a 2-1 triumph.Â

Boston tied the game in the second period. The Terriers obtained a penalty corner and Payton Anderson sent a shot that deflected off Sarah Althouse's body but star defender Kira Leclercq was there to collect her national-leading eighth defensive save. However, the refs called for a penalty stroke and Anderson delivered a strike that scooted past the stretching Althouse to level the match at 1-1.ÂBucknell's score was sweet!
