Field Hockey's Valiant Effort Falls Short in 2-1 Overtime Loss to #20 Penn State

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (3-5) gave the #20 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (4-3) a tenacious fight but fell 2-1 in overtime on a pleasant Sunday afternoon at Graham Field. The Orange & Blue led 1-0 on a Lily Neilson goal, but Penn State's 2024 Olympian Sophia Gladieux scored twice allowing the Big Ten team to escape with the hard-fought win. The game was eerily similar to last year's contest between the two teams, when Bucknell led 1-0 on a Neilson tally but fell 2-1 in regulation.
Neilson's goal came via a penalty corner opportunity late in the opening quarter. Bucknell used punishing pressure to obtain multiple opportunities that would have been scores on most goalkeepers but Penn State's guardian Aby Deverka turned away the surefire shots. On the penalty corner, the senior star received the perfect insertion from Isabella Pavlides and fired home a reverse-stick shot.
Penn State turned on the pressure in the next period but Sarah Althouse recorded three straight saves to turn away the Lions. Bucknell received another penalty corner opportunity but Kira Leclercq's shot was blocked.
The third quarter witnessed small chances for both teams but the defenses prevented any goals off penalty corners despite quality looks. The Bison entered the fourth quarter clinging to the 1-0 lead.
Penn State finally broke through for the equalizer four minutes into the fourth quarter. A penalty corner insertion from Julienne van Bekk sent the ball to Gladieux, who calmly sent a screaming shot past the Bison defense. Gladieux appeared to score the go-ahead goal minutes later off a penalty corner but it was waved off on a foul.
Bucknell had a golden opportunity with less than a minute left when Nicky Punt obtained a great pass and had the goal ahead of her but the shot went wide and the game headed to overtime.
Penn State scored quickly in the overtime period when Gladieux displayed her Olympian talent and maneuvered through the scoring circle dodging Bison sticks before delivering a strike past Althouse for the 2-1 win.
Bucknell hits the road to Worcester for a Patriot League showdown at Holy Cross next Saturday.
