Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison return to Patriot League play on Saturday against a suddenly in-form Holy Cross side at Emmitt Field. Both teams won their conference openers at home last weekend. Bucknell downed Navy 2-1, while the Crusaders came from behind to beat Lehigh 2-1.
- The Bison welcome back an old friend on Saturday, as former assistant coach and interim head coach Matt Brown is now in his first year as head coach at Holy Cross. Brown spent three seasons in Lewisburg from 2019-21 and was interim head coach in 2021.
- Bucknell most recently dropped a 3-0 verdict at unbeaten Cornell on Tuesday night. The Big Red, who are two spots outside of the top-25 and already have a 3-2 win over Penn State and a 2-2 draw with No. 14 Georgetown, scored midway through the first half and then added two more in the late stages of the match.
- Freddie Lapworth made seven saves against Cornell, including several highlight-reel stops to keep it a 1-0 game for most of the night. Lapworth has played all 540 minutes in goal thus far and has 21 saves, eight goals against, and two clean sheets.
- Bucknell is now 3-3 overall this season, with the wins coming against Robert Morris, Mount St. Mary's and Navy.
- Cohen Weaver and Cade Whitmire both registered a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win over the Midshipmen on Saturday. Weaver (Penn State) and Whitmire (Tulsa) are both transfers in their first year at Bucknell, and both recorded their first collegiate points in the victory.
- Weaver was recognized as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week on Monday. He set up Whitmire's opening goal in the 12th minute, and then eight minutes later he scored himself on a beautiful redirect to the top corner off a low cross in from Jack Lucas.
- Lucas now has a Patriot League-high three assists and five points on the season. The Bison have six goals, coming from six different players. Lucas, Weaver, Whitmire, Cade McGrath, Drew Roskos, and Ben Sheffield have all count the back of the net. David Krumov has a pair of assists.
- All five matches had a winner on the opening day of Patriot League play. Bucknell sits at the top of the table along with American, Boston University, Colgate, and Holy Cross.
- Dave Brandt is Bucknell's 14th full-time head coach and just the third dating back to 1967. Brandt, who is now in his third season at Bucknell, brought with him a remarkable career record of 354-86-40 in stints at Messiah, Navy, and Hope. Brandt won six Division III national championships at Messiah and led Navy to the 2013 Patriot League title and an NCAA Tournament first-round win.        Â
- Brown took over as the Crusaders head coach in June after a two-year stint as head coach at Union College. His team has enjoyed a sensational week. After scoring twice in the final 18 minutes to turn around the Lehigh game on Saturday, the Crusaders scored a dramatic goal with just over one minute remaining to pull out a 2-2 draw with No. 5 Clemson in Worcester.
- Evan Jones gave Holy Cross the lead on Clemson just 2:35 into the match, when he hustled to tap home a goalkeeper spill after a long attempt played in from midfield. After the Tigers scored two minutes apart early in the second half to take the lead, they went down to 10 men after a red card in the 69th minute, and then senior John Kowalski scored his first career goal on a volley from the center of the area with 1:07 remaining.
- Through seven games, Holy Cross has scored 11 goals and conceded 11. Jones leads the way with four goals along with an assist, and Jonathan Klein has two goals and an assist. Jones was the 2021 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and is a three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection. He has 22 goals and 12 assists in his career. Klein is also a high-scoring senior with nine goals and 10 assists in his career.
- Josh Tubbs has started five of the seven games in goal and is 2-1-2 with 21 saves and six goals allowed. He had six saves on Monday against Clemson.
- Holy Cross sophomore Marques Nana-Sinkam is the nephew of former Bison football standout Sam Nana-Sinkam, who is now a member of the Bucknell board of trustees. Â Â
- Sophomore forward Brian Salvino played with Bucknell's Jackson and Collin Sullivan and Lyons Township High School in Illinois. Sophomore Kevin Cull was teammates with Bucknell's Aidan Lawlor at Delbarton School in New Jersey.
- Bucknell is 15-12-6 in 33 previous meetings with Holy Cross. The teams first clashed in the Patriot League's inaugural season in 1990.
- The Bison and Crusaders squared off once per season – they have never met in the postseason – all the way up through 2019. They were in opposite divisions in the COVID-modified spring 2021 season and did not play.
- The Bison are 8-3-3 in their last 14 games against Holy Cross, although the Crusaders swiped a 2-1 win last season in Worcester on a Jonathan Klein goal with 1:44 to play. A Bucknell clearance out of the deep corner ricocheted 90 degrees off the back of a Holy Cross player and right to Evan Jones, who fed Klein for the goal.
- Zane Domsohn has scored three times in two career appearances against the Crusaders. He scored a 78th-minute equalizer off a Jack Roberto assist last season, and he also had a brace as a freshman in Bucknell's 4-1 win at Emmitt Field.
- Bucknell has scored in 19 straight games against Holy Cross, dating back to a 0-0 draw in Lewisburg in 2003. Â Â
- After Saturday's game the Bison will have a week off to prepare for a trip to American on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. American's home field is under construction this fall, so the Eagles are playing their home games at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
