Men’s Soccer Finishes in Scoreless Draw with Holy Cross

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freddie Lapworth made six saves in back of a stout defensive effort, but the Bucknell men's soccer team could not find the finishing touch at the other end and finished in a scoreless deadlock with Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Both teams won their Patriot League openers last weekend and are now 1-0-1 after two rounds of conference play. The Crusaders (2-3-3) came in full of spirit after beating Lehigh 2-1 and then pulling out a dramatic 2-2 draw with No. 5 Clemson, the defending national champion, in its two most recent outings. The Bison opened league action with a 2-1 home win over Navy last Saturday.
Bucknell finished with a 10-9 shot advantage forcing Josh Tubbs into three saves. Two of those stops were tough ones in the late stages. He had to dive to left to get his fingertips on a low rocket from David Krumov in the 73rd minute, and then in the final two minutes Tubbs made a save on Jackson Sullivan's sharp header from a Krumov free kick.
The best of Lapworth's six saves came 12 minutes into the second half, a kick save to deny Ethan Gill after the speedy winger got a half-step on the right flank.
Holy Cross had a couple of good looks in the first half. Evan Jones had lots of room in the center of the area in the 20th minute but pulled his volley wide of the left post. James Ferraro then got deep into the area before Sullivan swept his heavy touch out of the 6-yard box.
Jack Lucas had another strong night on the left wing, and he led the Bison with three shot attempts along with several dangerous crosses.
"This was a hard game to play," said head coach Dave Brandt. "Holy Cross deadened the game a bit and was effective in limiting our chances, and then they are very dangerous on the counter attack. It was a difficult game, but I'm glad for the clean sheet."
The Bison now have a week off before visiting American next Saturday night. The Eagles are playing their home games this year at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
