Two Goals in Two Minutes Lead Field Hockey to 2-1 Win Over Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (2-4) rebounded with a solid 2-1 win over the tough Ivy League Columbia Lions (1-2) on Sunday afternoon. The Orange & Blue scored two goals in two minutes to build a 2-0 lead. Columbia tallied a goal in response but Bucknell held strong and clinched its second win of 2024. Gianna Puorro and Sally Hunter notched goals for the Bison. It was Hunter's second goal of the season, as the freshman tied for Lily Neilson's scoring lead with two.
Recap
The first quarter featured very little action but Columbia did have a shot attempt 52 seconds into the game. The shot went wide. Neilson recorded a shot attempt but the save was made. Neilson tried again minutes later but the save was made again.
The Bison obtained several penalty corners in the second period. Kira Leclercq took her usual sizzling shots at them but the Columbia goalkeeper proved resolute. Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Althouse recorded a save as per her usual stout presence in the cage.
The third period witnessed all the action and scoring. Bucknell started it in the 39th minute when Gianna Puorro scored off a penalty corner. The shot came off an assist via Kira Leclcerq and was a deflection into the goal. A minute later, another penalty corner set up the second Bucknell goal. Puorro fired a shot attempt into goal and Hunter was there to tap in the ball for the 2-0 lead.
Columbia scored three minutes later on a deflected shot. The Lions obtained a penalty corner and fired a shot into the mess of humanity. A Columbia stick found the bouncing ball and tapped it in for the score.
Bucknell was determined not to allow a repeat of Friday's game at Wagner and its defense only allowed one shot during the fourth quarter. The strong defensive effort brought home Bucknell's second win of the 2024 season.
The Bison return home next weekend to Holmes Stadium to face Boston University (Sept. 20) and Penn State (Sept. 22) in two huge matchups.
