LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (14-20, 5-4 Patriot League) dropped a pair of doubleheaders 3-0 and 16-1 (6) to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (19-14, 9-0 Patriot League) on Sunday afternoon.
The Bison couldn't generate much offense and the pitching held steady until Lehigh scored 12 runs in the fifth inning of the second game. Bucknell committed four errors in the second game leading to the onslaught of runs.
Game One Recap
Hunter Vestal started the game for Bucknell and went the distance, yielding three runs and only allowing one run through six innings. The senior pitcher obtained three strikeouts against a potent offense.
Lehigh broke the scoreless deadlock with a run in the fourth inning. A Cannon double and a Dudley single and stolen base created a second and third situation. Lovett struck out, but the ball was in the dirt necessitating a throwdown to first base. The out was obtained as Cannon broke for home and slid under Zoie Smith's tag.
The Mountain Hawks added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. A leadoff walk, single, and a sacrifice bunt set up second and third. A RBI grounder scored the first run, and a single down the left-field line added the next tally.
Bucknell attempted to rally, but a leadoff single by Bella Radican was erased by a double play. A pop-up ended the game.
Game Two Recap
Madison Roukey started in the circle but did not obtain an out, as Lehigh scored four runs in the opening frame. An error by Brooke Popella launched the trend. A single, double, and another single scored three runs and chased Roukey from the contest. Savannah Jones entered and gave up a double for the fourth run. Jones stabilized the situation, pitching excellent ball until the fifth inning.
Bucknell loaded the bases in the third inning on a single and two walks but a grounder ended the inning.
The Bison tallied a run in their fourth frame. Sarah Zimmerman singled and after two fielder's choices had Marissa Rapino on second base. Noelle Gardon singled into right-center field, and Rapino scored when the center fielder's throw bounced away.
Lehigh put the contest to bed in the fifth inning by scoring 12 runs. Three singles and a sacrifice bunt scored the first run and chased Jones from the game. Zimmerman shifted from center field to pitcher and obtained two grounders that should have ended the inning, but two errors occurred. Two singles and another error made it 10-1, and Vestal entered the circle. Three more singles made it 13-1. Two additional singles created a 16-1 situation. Mea Consentino was sent into the fray and obtained the final out.
Bucknell needed eight runs to continue the game but went down 1-2-3.
Notes
Zoie Smith poled her 38th career double during the second game. She is now tied for seventh all-time with Taylor Wolfgang in Bucknell history.
