BOSTON, Mass.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (15-25, 6-9 Patriot League) battled the first-place Boston Terriers (40-4, 12-0 Patriot League) to the brink in a pair of 1-0 defeats. Bucknell lost the first game 1-0 in 12 innings and fell in the second contest in the regulation seven frames.
Game One Recap
Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison and pitched magnificently against one of the best-hitting teams in the league.
Bella Radican prevented an early Boston advantage in the opening inning by tracking down a softly hit pop-up in right field. The second baseman made an incredible over-the-shoulder catch. The grab proved decisive as the following batter, Roncin, doubled to center field. A lineout ended the frame.
Bucknell placed two runners on the base paths in the following frame when Jones and Angelina Seropian singled, but a Noelle Gardon grounder ended the inning.
The Bison had a chance to score in the sixth inning when Zoie Smith worked a six-pitch walk and Jones also walked. But Smith was controversially called out for leaving early on a foul ball, and Radican's pop-up was chased down to erase the opportunity.
The Orange & Blue had a big opportunity in the ninth inning. Jones and Radican singled with one out. However, Seropian flied out and Gardon struck out swinging.
Both teams continued to duel throughout the extra innings. Boston had a prime opportunity to score the game-winning run in the 11th inning with runners on the corners, but a grounder to Radican ended the chance.
Boston broke through for the winning run in the 12th inning. The Terriers used two singles and a sacrifice bunt to score the winning run for the 1-0 win.
Game Two Recap
Madison Roukey received the ball for game two and pitched five scoreless innings. She faced some trouble in the second frame but avoided yielding any runs.
The Terriers broke the deadlock with a run in the fifth inning. Two singles and an error by Radican opened the door for the run.
The Bison almost tied the game in the final inning. MaKenzie Hilling singled to center field and Annabella Hawkins singled up the middle to give Bison fans hope. Gardon battled at the plate but her foul ball to the first baseman ended the game.
